A. B is just rude and could alarm someone elderly or hard of hearing. However, it does annoy me when you ring a number and get someone's answering machine, realise it's the wrong number and put it down - and they phone you back having rung 1471 to find out who you are! Surely they don't expect you to leave an ansafone message for them! This has happened to me a couple of times and I think it's totally bizarre!

our phone number is one digit different to a local popular solicitors practice which just to add to the confussion  happens to have a solicitor with the same surname as us working there so we get a lot of wrong numbers,  it annoys me when people have clearly phoned wrong number and rather than just say so they put phone down

I've had that too Smurfy, especially from work.  1471 can be a pain in the neck sometimes.  (Yes I know I can withhold my number but a lot of people block withheld numbers!).  When a space on a course comes up at short notice we phone the first person on the waiting list.  If there is no reply we phone the next person, etc.  Then you can guarantee that as soon as we've filled the place, the first person will phone back, having dialled 1471, and want to know what we wanted.  Then they're annoyed that the place has gone!

My favourite thing is when you tell someone they've got the wrong number and they ask 'are you sure?'! As if you don't know who you live with! I used to work at a printers and one woman phoned up thinking we were the Co-Op bed department. I told she had the wrong number and she very shirtily said 'well this is the number they gave me!' When I told her we were most definitely not a bed department and a printing firm, she demanded to know what the correct number was! Did she think I had it on a jotter pad in front of me just in case?

We got lots of disgusting phone calls because our number was similar to a massage parlour. One call was received by my daughter who was about 14 at the time and it really upset her. I dialled 1471, got the number of the caller and rang back to have a go at him. I was actually put through to the switchboard of a big company and when I explained the problem they went all-out to find who had been using their phones to make disgusting calls. They found the guilty man, repremanded him and then the personneol director phoned me back to apologise to my daughter.

My parents have a very similar number to their local Kwik Save. It used to drive them mad getting calls to find out when the orange juice delivery was required! Personally I think they were more bothered that it was Kwik Save and not Sainsburys or Waitrose...
