I am safe and well thanks - i got to Old Street before any explosions happened - it is chaos around here

It's chaos here too. The roads are all closed and all you can here is sirens.

We have been advised to stay where we are and await further instructions.

It's quiet scary to think how close I am.

I've worked in London for years and there has always been a threat. Yes it is scary when you are only yards from explosions - as long as everyone is ok and EXTRA careful. Take no risks on the way home

The Head people here are discussing whether to come in tomorrow or not. We will all now later on today.

As far as I know the mainline stations are running fine. I do not use the tube so I am lucky there.

Any information I have read has been on news pages, I have not seen any new programmes.

The sirens are continuing as there are still people trapped underground in Russell Square.

Hope everyone is OK. I am on holiday today and planned to come to London to do some family history. Eddie's cab is parked in Tavistock Sq but he is safely here with me. Got family in London but all are OK.

Hope everyone gets home OK. It's horrible.

Thanks for thinking of me, but I am a long way from London (Plymouth) and I am fine. So pleased to hear that you are all safe.

Hugs from the south-west

I've made it in to work today and London is functioning. There are less people about, but I think thats understandable.

Russell Sqaure is still cordened off and you can not get close to it at all.

Post by: oldspice on July 09, 2005, 01:18:40 pm

That's right. My husband's cab was on a rank opposite the BMA. It is inside the main circle that is cordoned off and was parked very close to the bus. It is a Metrocab and not the one you can see in pictures parked just behind the bus.

We don't know if it has been badly damaged or destroyed as forensics are still working in the area. He cannot go to London to recover it for days yet. We don't care. We are just glad he was not in it when the explosion happened.

Hope everyone is Ok and all friends and family too.

I am impressed with the way everyone behaved calmly and helped each other.

You're right, tragic events like this do tend to put things in perspective.  A few days ago at work we were all complaining about our legs being too fat/thin/short/shapeless etc, but now we're saying we're lucky to have legs at all after hearing about some of the horrific injuries.

Tony Blair is saying we wont be terrorised but I'm scared.  I came back from weymouth via Bristol and Birmingham and I found myself giving anyone with a slightly Arab-look a second glance to see if they had a suspicious rucksack.  I know it's irational and slightly racist but I can't help it.  These people are among us, a sleeper cell could be in your street.  One thing we must not do is assume all Muslims are terrorists.  99.99% are exactly like everyone else and just get on with their lives.  These nutters don't represent Islam any more than the Klu Klux Klan represent Christianity.

Title: London Explosions
Post by: goldencup on July 09, 2005, 10:14:29 pm
So what constitutes a 'suspicious rucksack'?
Title: London Explosions
Post by: on July 09, 2005, 10:15:15 pm
I don't know.  That's why it's irational.
Title: London Explosions
Post by: goldencup on July 09, 2005, 10:15:37 pm
Or even irrational?

You can't even be sure the "suspects" will be Arab-looking. Some of them have white supporters like that guy that tried to carry a bomb on a plane. He was white and British.

However, their aim is to divide and rule and we must try not to succumb.(?)

The shoebomber, Richard Read?  I thought he looked distinctly Asian.

It's dark, dingy and grimey.  But it's so much more than that.  It's an embodiment of everything that's rotten and decayed about British Public transport.

I remember it being like that years ago when I used to regularly travel up to Brum by coach.  Obviously it hasn't improved then.

Public transport is very poor still, despite our "beloved" mayor (i did NOT vote for him and never would - i remembered the GLC) asking us to not use the car... w**ker he is

No, and in their infinite wisdom, instead of updating it Birmingham City Council wanted to build a new one at Ludgate Hill - which is not only even less convenient than Digbeth for the city centre (no mean feat; Bounty will back me up on that!), but also a beautiful area that needs a huge coach station dumping in it like Rik Waller needs 'feeding up'! Luckily too many of us protested and now Digbeth is supposed to be getting a facelift.

It was a bit of a nightmare on Sat with the centre closed off, but luckily I live very close so I didn't have to worry about not being able to get a bus or cab home.

Ken is a saint.
Title: London Explosions
Post by: lemoneye on July 11, 2005, 11:51:51 am

A saint? The patron saint of mismanagement and taxation? Quite possibly.

Title: London Explosions
Post by: oldspice on July 11, 2005, 08:25:57 pm

Under his leadership, the GLC provided a voice for many previously marginalised groups. These were tax payers like the rest of us, but until Ken provided the means, they had remained unrepresented and un-funded.

I travelled on the transport system throughout the late seventies and early to mid eighties. During that time Ken greatly reduced the cost of travel but dramtically increased the efficiency.

Unlike his contemporary in Westminster, he did not attempt to reduce the housing and public buildings stock by selling them off for a song; nor did he attempt to move vulnerable people out of the borough to derpive them of a vote that would have allowed them to continue to live in decent local authority housing.

he is indeed a saint. God bless him

I don't have any party political views so can't comment.  however I do like Ken Livingstone from what I know of him.  Does he still keep newts?
Title: London Explosions
Post by: lemoneye on July 12, 2005, 10:33:55 am

The "improvements" in CENTRAL London were afforded by bleeding the outer lying boroughs dry!

As the song says "Now the world don't move to the beat of just one drum, whay might be right for you, may not be right for some etc" - Oldspice and I will never agree on certain political topics. Personally, I don't like Red Ken, nor most of the current government, but it's what the "masses" wanted, or should i say the hundreds of tiny labour constituencies (same area - ie square metres - as one conservative) and the Sun newspaper.

But... the major issue is the urgent and required implementation and enforcement of a universal religion and racism ban. That would put a stop to a good proportion of this mischief and nonsense.

Vote for me at the next election...

Hah would like to see a religion ban work. I say we should follow the
basics of most religions and just treat the Earth better rather than
destroying everything out of selfishness.

Some good points lemoneye. It's true we don't all think alike and no two people will have identical political views. When they do it often leads to the type of carnage we saw in London last week.

Going back to the terrorist attack.

I am pleased your husband is ok oldspice, I know it was a very worrying
time. At times like that it does make you count your blessings.

London is pretty much back to normal now. From what I have seen on the
morning and evening trains, it has not stopped people from coming into
work. Some bits are a little surreal, like when I look up the side
streets and see the police cordens, I remember why they are there.

P.S Ken has my backing.

Thanks choc chick. He is still unable to work because his cab is parked only ten yards from the exploded bus and the forensic team is still conductingfinger tip search of the very centre of the blast area. We don't know how badly damaged the cab is yet. From pictures they have shown us, the cab is covered in debris but we can only see the side of the cab parked away from the blast.

It has made us count our bessings. he could so easily have been sitting in the cab at the time. We are very blessed.

I can't help thinking about the poor man who was blown out of a tube train and under the wheels of an approaching train. All those poor relatives clinging onto hope.

We are so lucky.

There are a lot of what if's in a situation like this. When me and my
work mate go for a walk at lunchtime that is one of the routes we take
as it is a pleasent area.

I am just pleased the police seemed to have tracked down the people responsible.

Yeah its good news. Also a little scary though. These lads are very young to be involved in this sort of thing. Also they have come from a densely populated muslim area which worries me even more. If there is someone putting ideas into impressionable teenagers heads we could be in for a whole shed-load more trouble...
Title: London Explosions

I absolutely agree. I feel strongly that these are young people with a deep religious faith and that they have been corrupted by people with a deeper mission, people who are using these youngsters. Because of that, I mourn these young people.
