Title: New plans to tackle obesity
Post by: on June 12, 2005, 10:08:13 am

Found in the Northumberland Gazette...

'In Middlesborough where obesity among adults is at one in five, fast food restaurants are to run a pilot scheme, which if successful will be introduced in other cities where expanding waistlines are a problem.  The burger outlets will install barriers and only those slim enough to pass through will be admitted.  Staff will also have the discretion to refuse to serve anyone who they deem is too fat.  "The barriers can be moved in case of fire", a spokesman for one burger chain said.'

This is of course a Bounty Scam, but it sounds like a good idea to me.  Does anyone else think this is good?  You can be refused a drink in a pub if you are drunk and you can't drink at all if you're under 18, so why not extend the same logic to obesity?

What about removing forum members on the grounds of them being stupid?

Have you ever seen an over weight person eat too much, get aggressive and start a fight cause he/she has had a "gutful"?

Couldn't the obese person just ask/pay a skinnier person to go get the food for them? And what about drive-thrus?

Silly Yank, sending a non fattee for the food would be eliminated because you would have no takeaways, unless you can demonstrate that you intend to eat the food.  Drive thru's would be a loophole I agree.

How about letting people make their own decisions?

A pointless comment.  No you can't because lots of people are not able to make the right choices for themselves. I wish they could but they can't otherwise people who weigh 25 stones wouldn't eat at McDonalds would they? Also, there are lots of parents who think it is a good idea to take their children to Fast Food outlets regularly. These people need friendly encouragement too.

If a skinny person tries to buy a diet coke will they be told they can't have a diet drink or a salad because they are too skinny?

Well no it's not a pointless comment actually. Not everyone wants to live in a nanny state. Just because some people can't control their appetites I don't see why the government or anyone else should tell me what I can and can't eat!!

I don't want to row with you Bounty, but you've been expressing some very odd ideas lately - and if you're going to propose putting people in the stocks and telling them what they can and can't eat based on their waistline, you're going to get people disagreeing with you!

Bounty Hunter, it's very patronising to say that people can't make the decision for themselves. They can, but they choose to eat the wrong foods despite all the warnings about heart disease and cancer resulting from high fat diets.

People should be informed then make their own decisions.

Bounty would love to respond but he has got his fat head stuck in the burger shop barriers.

A spokesman for the burger chain was quoted as saying, " Bounty?! You're damn right he was 'bounty' do that. We cannot condone any fat heads attempting such reckless actions."

All the health warnings are out there be it on posters, tv programes,
documentaries, Supersize Me for example, books and magazines. There is
also professional help like your GP. And if people still choose to make
the wrong choices, that is their decision.

Hmmm, should people be controlled in order to prevent poor decisions? Yes, i think they should. Although it would cripple the tobacco industry, on the upside would be a distinct lack of Messrs Blair Brown and Prescott...

Actually, yes I did have one at the Turkish place last year. It's Halal and guaranteed 95% lean meat.  It was very nice with red cabbage, onion and some mild chilli sauce.  Yum

Lamb is not an animal, but sheep is.  Lamb is to sheep as calf is to cow.  Calf is not an animal.

Sorrt to be pedantic.

Yes, A lamb is an animal but lamb is not an animal.  Can you see the distinction?  It's known as semantics and is something pedants like me take pride in.
