Title: A bit of poetry...
Post by: oldspice on May 13, 2005, 08:08:18 am

This verse in W H Auden's As I walked out one Evening struck me as very fitting just now:

In headaches and in worry

Vaguely life leaks away

And time will have his fancy

To-morrow or to-day.

What does it mean?

I think it means that anxiety is ever-present and we are always looking for an end to it but whilst we are doing so life is slipping by and time will take us when it suits him/her.

In other words, life's too short to worry about most things..... but we do it anyway!

Some of WH Auden's poetry is quite depressing. He wrote Stop All The Clocks about a lover who had died and also wrote a peom about refugees.

I think the poem As I Walked Out One Evening was written at a difficult time in the poet's life - he was homosexual when it was illegal and deeply affected by war - of course, artisitic types are intensely sensitive.
