If you were to get a box of chocs as a gift , which ones would yu like to receive most? Only alowed to choose something that is available now so don't all say Weekend and Biarritz.

I like Dairy Box too - at around £5 per box I certainly do not consider them to be cheap though! Tacky? Only if stored in a warm place, and I prefer the word "sticky"

I would say Roses or Quality Street as my main choice.

And Neoplotians. Sorry if that is spelt wrong. Made by Terry's. About 6 different chocolate squares in a box and you actually get quite a lot in there!

After Eight chocolates are the finest after-dinner mint you can ever buy. The delicate mint wafers are covered entirly in dark lucious chocolate and melt slowly in your mouth. Truly irresistable!

It's never wrong to be picky about spelling and grammar! (But then again I am a copywriter so if I wasn't picky, I'd be unemployed...

Back to topic - does anyone remember Harlequin chocolates? They were like a poor man's Roses. There was always a bit of a hierarchy when it came to chocs at Christmas - Roses are best, Quality Street second, then Harlequin at the bottom of the pile.

When did they get rid of Biarritz?

Title: Box of choc question.

As a teacher whose job includes teaching correct spelling and grammar, I have come to the conclusion that it's a matter of time and place. In an informal setting like the forum, casual spelling and grammar is like a form of casual speech.

However, if someone is being picky or nasty about other aspects of people's postings (as was the case recently) their own postings are likely to come under scrutiny, including their spelling and grammar.

Y care bout spellin n grammer!!!!!!!!!!
Title: Box of choc question.
Post by: on October 25, 2004, 12:21:58 pm

Many concerns about grammar are in fact relating to semantics rather than grammar.  I am something of a grammar pedant, although I agree with Spicy that in a situation like this it's usually not important.

I say usually, as just ocassionally bad grammar and punctuation can lead to misunderstandings.

Post by: goldencup on October 25, 2004, 12:45:11 pm

Ha!  I assume 'ocassionally' was a trap then, in which case I fell for it! Did you see the programme about the Broads last night?  Great stuff.

Aveit, spelling and grammar does sometimes matter. For example, did you know that nine out of ten job applications sent in by young people are rejected within first glance because of basic spelling and grammar errors?

That's true in some cases, no doubt Spicey. Never the less I work for a large international company employing 4,000 people with a turn over of £125 million and they will employ anyone, even if they are semi literate.  It largely depends on what job they are expected to do.  Some jobs, i.e automated picking, require next to no literacy skills.

Post by: loulou on October 26, 2004, 01:57:13 am

I am very picky about spellings but promise not to pick anymore.

Bad handwriting is worse than bad spelling and as we can only type on here i can't tell who is a neat writer and who isn't.

Title: Box of choc question.
Post by: oldspice on October 26, 2004, 01:27:26 pm
I don't think spelling and grammar are important on the Forum but I would not like young people to think it does not matter at all. People with low literacy and numeracy skills generally earn less and their children are generally more likely to have lower skills themselves and thus a low income and so it goes on.
Title: Box of choc question.
Post by: on October 26, 2004, 02:05:11 pm

But how do you encourage the lower classes to take a greater interest in education, when it's so uncool?  Surely we have to accept that the poverty of choice is always going to be there.

Title: Box of choc question.
Post by: oldspice on October 26, 2004, 05:25:44 pm

With respect Bounty, please do not confuse low levels of literacy with class.  Of course, it is true that people with poor literacy skills are more likely to come from the so-called lower classes - but it is not always a matter of choice but opportunity and access. It's an enormously complex issue, and one that is currently being tackled by the government.

Anyway, back to chocolate - I saw KitKat Blood Orange in Woolies today but resisted the urge to buy one. Actually, there was no urge if I'm honest.

Post by: on October 26, 2004, 09:37:02 pm
Thanks Spicey, the correlation to which you elude is of course what I meant, not that to be in the lower classes automatically confers poor literacy.
