Title: Olympics 2012
Post by: wjp666 on July 28, 2012, 01:54:36 am
well, it IS the elephant in the room.

so - what did everyone think of the opening ceremony?

i live in weymouth (as i know i've stated more than once) and we are host to the olympic sailing. it is a nightmare down here at the moment in regards to traffic, tourists, military patrolling the streets etc. going to stay indoors for a few weeks and hope this all passes.

Well.....I enjoyed it.  Bits (scene changes, cauldron, fireworks) were amazing.  Other bits were confusing.  Some were just odd.  I liked the Mr Bean bit and James Bond.  Not sure about getting Mohammed Ali involved.  And Hey Jude was awful.  But generally good!

Yes, generally good opening and quite  a contrast with beijing. No idea if we'll win many medals though.

I watched bits of the opening ceremony (there was a good documentary about Thin Lizzy over on BBC4) and, like GC, found some bits very good and some rather strange. I loved the bit with the Queen (especially the corgis) However, it cost £27 million. That's a lot of money considering we're being told 'austerity cuts' are necessary.

did anyone else see the nazi salute during the germany entrance at the opening? if not, type NAZI SALUTE OLYMPICS CEREMONY into youtube... watch out for Boris and Camilla sat behind the guy - priceless! i would link it here but youtube are constantly taking the clip down.

Disgraceful. There was also a group of men who directed a nazi salute at several black security guards.

Well haven't we done well so far.
I'm assuming that's why it's extra quiet on the forum at the moment, we're all glued to the TV cheering on brits :)

Does anyone else think the coverage is getting a bit much? I know it's exciting to have the Olympics here, but BBC News this morning was a joke - 30 minutes on sport and then 'oh, in other news, first pictures from the spacecraft that's just landed on Mars, multiple deaths in Wisconsin siege, and 16 killed in border attack in Egypt'.

are you suggesting that space conquests and the tragic loss of human lives are somehow more important that some people running quite fast and jumping really high?

Yes - and I'm totally bloody-well sick to death of seeing the frigging Duchess of Cambridge and Willie & Harry in the front row of every bloody event at the Olympics AND Wimbledon AND Ascot AND the Euro Football and I'm sick of being told (and shown) what she was wearing and what her sister was wearing and her mum and bla, bla bloody bla!!

There. That feels much better!

i'm generally not watching much of it this year, unlike previous olympics. i think where weymouth has been so preoccupied with the preparations for the last god-knows-how-long it really has ruined it for me. when i need to pop into town quick and can't because the entire seafront has been blocked off by armed military people for the sailing it kind of makes me not want to be part of it. bah, humbug!

That music doesn't really represent England. Where was XTC? The Fall? The Damned? No, we got One fucking Direction and a bunch of twats who've lost it.

Well, I think The Who were a good representation of British pop - even if there are only 50% of them left. Do The Damned even play together anymore? Doesn't Captain have a solo career?

Yes, The Damned still gig, but only Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible exist of the original line up.

Oh, and good on George Michael for plugging his latest single at the Closing Ceremony. He's gone up in my estimations!

I think people are disappointed because Danny Boyle showed with the opening ceremony that Britain could be creative, fresh, entertaining and modern. The closing ceremony seemed like such a wasted opportunity. A symphony of british music? Fine if that is your plan go for it but at least do it properly.

It's been over for weeks now but Weymouth is still refusing to take down all it's London 2012 flags. I have a horrible feeling they'll still be flying this time next year.

Well, this is where it gets annoying. Weymouth has permanantly taken down its fairy lights in favour of these new, horrible laser-light display beacons. They are truly ghastly, don't work properly and just look awful. Basically, there are now about 8 laser towers spaced across the seafront which project 'an amazing light display out onto the ocean'. In reality it just looks like half a dozen people are waving around laser-pointers.

This is what they're meant to look like:

Weymouth Promenade Seafront Lasers Beach Laser Show June 26th (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oibTX5aMWcU#ws)

Not bad, eh? Now take away the special effects and it just looks horrible.
