I think we're living in different time zones.  It's a temporal thing, y'know?

It was never done for the love of chocolate, just marketing, pure and simple.

I think it did work, to an extent. Clearly many of the varieties sell and perhaps better than the products they 'replaced'. Although I suspect what largely happened was the same as Nestle's experimental kit kat - more sales of the new products and less sales of the old (shifting existing customers around rather than attracting new ones).
I wonder if Cadbury are considering reducing emphasis on the dairy milk brand as ultimately its sales and market position will decline (as customers shift to darker 'healthier' chocolates). At least they're getting into fair trade - it could mean that soon all cocoa for 'confectionery' is sold on those terms.

I understood the reason for the CDM with... was to make CDM the best selling chocolate bar in the world.

Well it did immediately jump KitKat as a result. I'm assuming that Cadbury aren't stupid enough to rebrand a bunch of products just for an accolade like that.

I definitely read an article citing that as the reason for the change.
I googled and this was as close as I could find:

Well I for one very much enjoy a bar of Dairy Milk with Turkish Delight every now and then. I also loved the Wafer bar and wish they'd bring it back. I love the bubbly - I like it better than Wispa which seems to burn the back of my throat for some reason. I don't care what they call the bar - I am interested in the filling! Bacdk in the 1950s and early 1960s, Cadbury's did a range of Dairy Milk bars with a whole range of fillings - whole nut, fruit and nut, soft peppermint and fruit cream fillings such as strawberry, tangerine and pineapple. These were very popluar and I think the soft cream filling ones only disappeared because of production costs.

Bars these days cost so much to launch - what with millions spent on marketing and getting the bar in fornt of the consumer (big stores want financial incentives to give them shelf space) and the costs of setting up factory equipment to produce the bars - a huge volume of sales is needed to make the product viable so it can appear to fail but actually be very popular.

I know exactly what you mean about the back-of-the-throat thing with Wispas - they have the same effect on me!

Oh I love Wispas, real looking forward to the Gold edition.
As for the strange flavour Dairy Milk I spotted Cybercandy in Covent Garden had TONS of strange flavours, included forest fruit dairy milk, and one bar of dm with five different fruit creams. Cybercandy just import them, so they are still making them somewhere!
