A woman who celebrated her 108th birthday at the weekend has been called for jury duty despite being more than 40 years over the age limit.
-
I did when I turned 21.
-
Enjoyable experience or was it horrid?
-
A stabbin' if I recall. It went 5 days and the dick then pled guilty in the face of all the evidence.
-
It's awful when you are told not to discuss the case and you want to tell people.
-
YOU!?
You'd be sending a letter to Chat or Bella all about the case! ;)
-
I can't keep my gob shut.
-
i was called up a couple of years ago. i just ignored the letters (and threatened fines etc.) and they forgot about it.
-
Really? I thought you could end up in a lot of trouble if you didn't attend.
-
you can, apparently. i got all sorts of threatening letters. but i just ignored and it all went away. (they werent sent recorded delivery or anything, so i was just going to plead ignorant if they came to get me and say i never received them.) just didn't fancy sitting in a court-room for hours on end.
-
I hope you never say there is no justice in this country.
-
I would love to do it but has never been called up!

My brother-in-law did that and he was arrested and taken in front of a judge to explain himself. He was then fined £1,000! Serves him right too. We live in a democracy that makes it essential for people to be willing to do a public duty such as jury service. If everyone could not be bothered, the system would have to be replaced with something less democratic.
I did jury service 20 years ago. It was a nasty rape trial. I can't say too much except that some months after the trial, the accused did something much worse and two people ended up dead.
-
I did, I went and got sent home.
What I don't think people understand about jury service is that if they don't turn up, it not only wastes tax payers money but also allows the criminal being charges with whatever crime a reprieve and also a step closer to freedom or a lesser sentence because the defence can use the CPS's fluffing about to their advantage.
However old spice, we do not live in any democracy, we never have and anyone who thinks we are, think again, your being lied to.
To live in a democracy you are required to take part in the "Entire" political process. Truth is we do not have that option and therefore can not live in a society that is democratic. We are just told we do.
As we as individuals have no direct voice other than the person we elect to speak on our behalf, it is not your voice but the voice of an MP elected to follow the party line and any representations that they make or views that they make are their own and not those of the people that they serve.
The word democracy comes from the athenian word demokratia, which losley translate in to "people power."
People who did not take any part in the democratic process were called idiotes which as you guessed it... the word idiots come from.
Now, if they can have a democratic society back then, why not now and why is this country full of idiots that think that politics is boring or nothing to do with them? Fact is, most people talk politics without realising it.
Next time you have a good old whinge bag about prices, tax this, and how long you had to wait for a bus... its all politics at the end of the day.
If you really want a democratic society, you need to vote for it and I am not talking one of the top 3 or top 10 or so political parties.
Daft question but... who would you like to see in power?

Be careful what you wish for. Would you like a government like the ones that tend to form in Italy?
In a democracy everyone has a say but the majority must hold sway unless you wish chaos.
-
always be careful what you wish for.
-
Well it is far simpler to say that deomcracy ended when athenian style politics ended and what it has been replced with is nothing but a dictaorship.
-
Try Zimbabwe. I hear they have some forward thinking policies.

that's simple for you to say
-
Are you 623 in disguise?
-
Nope. Not me although I have been accused of being many things but never being in disguise.
-
Sometimes disguise is a good thing.
-
Dis guy's what?
-
Well if you were on the sick from work claiming you couldn't leave home but wanted to pop out for some choc and a magazine a wig and a floppy hat would be useful.

We are not, in any way, close to a dictatorship. Perhaps we are not as democratic as you would wish but we are far from being dictated to. The problem with this country is that people refuse to take their responsibilities seriously, so it is necessary to legislate in order to protect the majority. If people would only be good citizens, then fewer legislations would be necessary.
-
Well I am not talking about the government nannying the majority, that is something different. Democracy is the active participation of an individual, not a government making up regulations for people to follow, that is in essence a dictatorship (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/162240/dictatorship). Which is what were heading towards unless people stand up an speak out.
-
Well, it's up to people to do that. If they're too arse lazy to vote and to speak up, then they will be the type of people who 'things happen to' rather than the type of people 'who make things happen'.
-
Exactly, spot on.
-
We are heading for a form of Orwellian totalitarian state. The government wants to impose ID cards on everyone and use the threat of 'terrorism' as an excuse. I completely agree with oldspice that the people need to vote. Our ancestors fought for this right and what do people do with it?
-
Oh, and I've never been called up for jury service, but I expect I will. I sat in the Old Bailey gallery whilst a rape trial was on once. Not nice!
