Title: Old Bars pics
Post by: paulham on August 23, 2008, 01:34:50 pm
I am not sure if this has been asked before but I would like to see a separate category in the "Chocolate" section that shows pictures of the old discontinued bars in order that we can vote for them and reminisce about them.
Any chance Chocadmin?

Yes. They are a start.
What about pics of bars from even earlier?

It would be lovely to have such a thread but it is just so difficult to get pictures of bars from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Amazingly, companies do not seem to have an archive department that includes pictures of old bars.

The social significance of product packaging was not recognised, it seems, until Robert Opie started his collection, I think in the early 60s.  He has made a lucrative living from producing fridge magnets, postcards, posters and books containing images of products of yesteryear, including chocolate and sweets. You can see some of those products in his 50s, 60s and 70s scrapbooks.

I think paulham is right, although technically it would relax my 'rules' - as so far I've eaten every product you can vote on, and have kept the wrappers for the countline bars (in case I want to rescan at higher res - I'd have kept wrappers for them all but that would too nerdy ;) )
What I do need to do is change which database is outputting the current chocolate data, and change the discontinued section so that it is generated more dynamically - that will make it much easier to move products in and out of that classification.
Then I think it only right that I start adding some of your own products you've found, provided we can get some reasonable photos and info.
As you can probably tell I've been rather swamped by work recently, but Mrs Chocadmin is waiting for an operation so when she has that I'll have lots of time at home to update the site - oh and take care of her :P

She is far more important than some old chocolate bars.

Has anyone visited Robert Opie's museum?  Oldspice?

No, I'd love to, but I think it's been packed up and put into private-only viewing for some reason. I can't be sure but I thought I read somewhere that it was no longer for public viewing.

Robert Opie's museum used to be at Gloucester Locks but I believe it moved to Notting Hill. It was still open Spring 2007 when I last looked.

It is (or was) a fascinating place which took hours to look round because you'd keep stopping to shout "I remember that!" ...but then you realise you are recognising things from your childhood in a MUSEUM and it all seems really sad.
