Title: What's in a name?
Post by: paulham on July 25, 2008, 06:40:11 pm
Anyone now put off these because of the change of name?

Shame on you Nestle.

I haven't bought them for years anyway.  Altogether now - "Matchmakers make it for sharing."  A very strange and not even grammatically correct slogan.

This pack looks cheap and nasty and i still have not forgiven the Quality Street brand for allowing those vile Yorkie Bars to creep in a few Christmases ago.

What on earth is the point of that? Surely Matchmakers is more than strong enough as a brand in its own right? There's not even a sensible connection between the two.

Does anyone remember the original Matchmakers? When they were first launched, they were matchstick size and came in a long slim box with compartments. There were three flavours: mint, orange and coffee. Of course, that was back in the Rowntree days. They were considered a bit of a luxury (like After Eight Mints) and I considered myself lucky if I got a box for my birthday. They tasted much nicer back then - more special.

I am guessing that Nestle are "rationalising" the old Rowntree MacKintosh portfolio.
Lets be honest they don't really care much for it and have raped it of its best products for use in the international markets (Kit Kat).
I would not be surprised to see it disappear in a few years to be branded entirely as Nestle standardised bars such as CDM.
It is a shame really as I think individual bars hold a certain magic and charm perhaps as a remnant of childhood wonder and excitement.

Yes, sadly I remember them just as Oldspice described.

I can still remember the Goldencup adverts where there was a jingle at the end and they sang 'Goldencup by Mackintosh' (that's how they sang it - extending the 'ack').
