I would say it reflects the trend in younger parents not being capable of bringing a child up to understand right and wrong, respect for others, respect for themselves, who to conduct one's self in company, etc, etc.
Self indulgence has become the norm.

I think there is a stupid gene.  Scientists have known about it for ages but governments keep it quiet so that nutters like Adolph Hitler don't spring up.
