These were actually called Bitz bars - they come up a lot. They were made by Terry's and originally were very thin, crisp bars; then for some reason in the early 90s Terry's decided to ditch the USP of most of their products, and made Bitz into a standard thick chunk bar. They've now been discontinued altogether.

Someone somewhere will have one down the side of the sofa and it will end up on ebay.

Were the thin ones not called Mint Cracknel?

I've hear of Mint Cracknell, but Bitz definitely used to be thin.

Mint Caracknell was a different bar. It came in two pieces on a wooden tray and was milk chocolate covered minty candy. There were like shards of crunchy mint rock.  They also introduced Lime Cracknell for a while. Both made by Rowntrees.

There was another, similar bar to Bitz called Icebreaker, made by Cadburys.

It was also known as Toothbreaker, with good reason - it had the sensation of munching on broken glass
