Apparently the dog had to be sedated and the vet removed all the quills and it survived, but will have some disfigurement. I wondered if this was a bit gross for the general forum, but when I tried to post it in Adult Only, it said I had insufficient privilages.

It's gone again. The image seems to disappear after a short time. Possibly not a bad thing as it is a bit alarming.
