Title: Exercise for depression.
Post by: loulou on February 10, 2008, 05:03:09 pm
Doctors are increasingly prescribing exercise for people with depression, mental health campaigners have found.

Well that's just great but if you are feeling down you maybe haven't the energy to get out of bed.

When I used to swim three times a week I always felt mentally well. Now, the only exercise I get is walking to and from work and I do find I get a bit down - especially this time of year when there's not enough daylight. Mind you, it's been fantastic today - really sunny and warm!!

My mood is definitely affected by the weather - but exercise makes me feel good too.

Have you ladies found that these winter blues started at a particular point? For example, quite a few middle-aged people I know suffer quite badly from the winter-blues and it is something that's crept up on them over the years.
For example, as a child, I loved the winter and loved nothing more than long, dark, frosty days. (Even though we had no heating!!).  That continued into young adulthood until, one evening, I was sitting on the railway station platform at Upper Holloway, Islington, waiting for a train to take me home from work.  It was November and I was in the early stages of pregnancy.  I was suddenly overcome by the most awful feeling of dread and ever since then I have dreaded the winter and long for the spring. Even the summer is difficult for me because it is over-shadowed by the fear of on-coming winter.

I'm only 28 and I get the winter blues - but only post-Xmas. I like the early part of winter as it feels right that Christmas is wintery, but when January hits it's just cold and miserable and there's nothing to look forward to.

Try this exercise lads (you are on your own, ladies).
You might beat the blues and you will certainly beat the meat.
