Title: RIP cheques?

From 22nd February the UK's biggest retailer, Tesco, will no longer be accepting payment by cheque. Tesco will be following the lead of major chains such as Boots and Iceland, who both stopped taking cheques last year.

Does this bother you? How often do you pay by cheque? I used to occasionally when I first started uni, but then I discovered Switch so stopped using cheques in shops. I don't use them much at all now; occasionally I pay bills through the post with cheques, but many of these are direct debits now, or I pay online or by phone.

I use them very occasionally for things like school trips and Avon.  That's about it.

I use them now and then (most often to pay my daughter's rent!!) and I like the option of paying by cheque. I find Switch very convenient but I am less confident of chip and pin since my daughter's card was cloned (in a garage belonging to a national chain - disgraceful!) and her account emptied. Until the banks and the police put a stop to the prolific cloning of cards, cheques should be an option for everyone. If I am going somewhere different, where I haven't paid by card before, I always pay in cash. I have to plan ahead but it works for me.

I use cheques mostly to draw cash out of the bank.

Then I use that cash to pay for things in shops.

I use plastic all the time and haven't used a cheque for atleast 10 years. I pay all my bills either online or by card over the telephone. I use cash in shops or when I've overspent I use my card.

My mam uses her cards when she shops but doesn't understand paying bills by phone so she always sends a cheque for her gas, electric, telephone bills. I agree with oldspice that cheques should be an option.

I would probably use cards more if it wasn't for having to remember all the pesky PIN numbers!

Things like utilities are paid by good old Direct debit.

I should think it will inconvenience quite a lot of people when Tesco stop taking cheques. Does anyone else agree that the shops seem to run less and less for the needs of the customer every year?

Tesco will argue that it will save customers time - which anyone who has been stood behind someone looking through a huge bag for a chequebook will relate to! - but I agree it's more for the benefit of the company than the consumer.

I have had people send me cheques for ebay purchases and they have bounced for as little as 4.
