Title: Another new smoking law

In all the fuss about the ban, this has largely gone unnoticed, but from 1st October, it will be illegal for under 18s to buy tobacco products.

 

Do you think this is a good idea? I do - it's ridiculous that you can buy cigarettes at 16 but can't drink until you're 18. Why can't we just have an age when you become an adult and make that the age you can do everything (sex, marriage, smoking, drinking, driving - not all at once of course...)

Some of my younger students did some research on this new law as part of their citizenship programme and surprisingly enough, even the smokers among them agreed with this law. The average age of these students was 17. They agreed with the law because some of them had been able to buy cigarettes when they were as young as 11 and they thought this law would prevent shop keepers selling the stuff to very young kids. They felt that, although they had smoked at a young age, they did not want their younger brothers/sisters/cousins etc taking up the habit so young. It stimulated a lot of debate and they were able to compose letters to the local newspaper supporting the proposed law.  Not a bad response from a bunch of kids who were labelled 'disengaged' and 'distruptive' a few months ago.

When do I complain for someone stating a fact.? Maybe it is because I am a non smoker but I really don't care if people smoke at all as long as they don't do it in my face.

This says I don't care wether people start smoking at 8, 18 or 80.  It is not saying I am not taking an interest in the thread.

Not really; it's barely been three weeks since the last post in that thread. If I couldn't remember three weeks back I'd be seeing a doctor.
