Title: X factor
Post by: loulou on May 26, 2007, 10:47:47 pm
With contestants as young as 14 and Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne, Sinitta and  Dannii Minogue as judges I don't think the next series will be up to much.

I think 14 is too young - plus they've set an upper age limit too (I think it's 50), which for me goes against the whole point of the competition.

It's turning into more of a comedy mickey take show.

ITV have 'rested' Soapstar Superstar. I reckon Michael Grade thinks it's too lowbrow.

Shame, because I thought with Dermot hosting it would be good. Also I did not know about the upper age limit which I think will spoil it too.

Now I read the judges are Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne, Danni Minogue and Louis Walsh.

Anyone watching this?

What do you think?

Too many sob stories this year IMO

There are always too many sob stories. If you can sing brilliantly but had a happy childhood and live in a nice house, don't bother auditioning - come back when you've been in care, your parents have been killed in a horrific accident or you've lost a limb...

i've been extremely disappoinfted with the talent this year. i've think they've finally exhausted the UK's talent resources.

And a lot of them aren't even amateurs. Leona Lewis had been a drama school poppet for years, and that opera singer Paul Potts had done concerts in Italy! So where's the 'surprise discovery' of talent? The most distinctive sound this year has been that of the barrel being scraped.

During the auditions, there was a terrific little black boy aged about 15. He had an amazing voice. I hope he's still in the contest. I haven't watched for a  few weeks as I've been too busy.

He isn't - he got down to the last six boys, but Dannii Minogue didn't put him through. A major mistake.

I read Danni went on a picnic with one of the contestants then he was eliminated from the comp.

Well, I think he's got a great future ahead of him and may be it will be better for him not getting through because winning the show seems to pigeon hole people into a highly controlled pop career that potentially makes them very rich but probably not very fulfilled. A more varied career would suit him better, I think.

The contestants have to pass through 2 auditions before getting to appear in front of the celebrity judges...why is this never mentioned?

Certain contestants are invited to audition and do not have to go through this preliminary stage at all.

Last year, at least one of the contestants at the boot camp stage was invited back from the year before and didn't even audition.

It's a load of old tosh that anybody can turn up to the auditions and win.  The open auditions are mainly used to film the 'funny' and 'bad' contestants...some of which have been invited by the makers of the show through casting agencies.

There...got that off my chest Wink

Sharon Osbourne said she was leaving the show. She spat her dummy when two of her acts faced being voted off.

I thought last nights show was terrible. Surely better people turned up for the auditions than this lot.

Dannii picked all the wrong acts in my view, and Saturday night showed her limitations as a mentor. The other judges are experienced managers - Dannii is a performer, which doesn't necessarily qualify her to manage someone else's career.

But as WJP said, there is only so much talent out there. If anyone who has so much as sung a carol at their school concert is disqualified because 'they've had their chance' there would be a serious shortage of auditionees. The truth is that undiscovered singers are usually undiscovered for a reason...

I feel this show exists entirely to deliver a number one Christmas record to gullible audiences.  Most of the songs candidates sing are drivel and the production values are vulgar and shallow.

I saw about five minutes of Saturday's show, during which four or five perfectly nice girls were turned into virtual sluts for the male audience to drool over. I was therefore totally shocked to hear female members of the panel tell them how gorgeous they looked. I would not like my daughter being dressed by that lot. I've seen more respectably dressed women touting for business on street corners.

Louis Walsh  looked a bit disturbed all through their performance.

That poor girl wearing pink in the group Hope . How could they let her go on stage with a camels foot.

I can't believe Beverley has been dumped in preference to Rod, Jane and No Freddy (the frightful Same Difference).

She was a winner in my eyes (and ears).

I don't watch X factor so not sure what this is about.  I'm curious about the reference to a camels foot?  What's that, other than being the foot of a camel?

I am totally in the dark.

Who thinks the whole thing is a fix? How come Simon is hanging on to his acts even though they are cleary not as good as the other acts that have been shoved? Is public judgement really that bad?

Logger was correct. I did mean camels toe.LOL i am gutted Beverley was voted off before that group of girls who cannot sing. their lead singer Phoebe should be put through on her own as she certainly doesn't need the other 4 with her.

I think the voting this year has been very different due to the no  text vote rule after all the phone rip offs , not so many teen text votes dictating the outcome.

Clap I agree. I didn't think Nikki sang as well as Beverley on Saturday and yet she wasn't in the bottom two.

The problem is that Louis keeps being tough on the Valium Twins, so they get the sympathy vote. He should know better - last year when he had those naff Scottish brothers in exactly the same thing happened because Simon kept slating them.

But they deserve it! They're like Pollyanna meets Bucks Fizz. It's sickening to watch them. If they get to the final two acts, there's not justice.

It should have been a Nikki/Beverley final.  Even little Alisha who went a few weeks ago was a better act than the terrible two.

What do you all think of Rydian?
Title: X factor

I didn't like Rydian at first but he grew on me. I think he will probably make it into the final.

I completely agree - but unfortunately a hell of a lot of people out there don't want to hear anything other than 'you were wonderful!' from the judges and will boo regardless of how accurate the criticism is.

I think that often, Simon's evaluation is spot on but wih these two I think he just has his eye on the dollars he can make. The little kids will love them and the old dears will love them so they're worth a lot of dosh to him.

Niki was fantastic again. She should win.

I had to leave the room when Same Difference sang with Jason Donovan, it made me cringe too much.

Post by: oldspice on December 16, 2007, 05:43:48 pm
I am SO glad Same Difference came third.

I would have preferred Rydian to win but I am reasonably happy with Leon. Some of his performances have been great but a good few were not at all good.

I would have preferred a Niki/Beverley/Rydian final.

Post by: loulou on December 16, 2007, 06:24:33 pm
I think Leon needed to win to get anywhere whereas Rydian will be a big star anyway. Same difference need to go jump off a cliff. I wanted to see Beverley  Leon and Rydian in the final

Post by: smurfboy on December 17, 2007, 01:50:45 pm
It will actually be better for Rhydian that he didn't win. He'd have had to record a pop album and it wouldn't have suited his voice or style. Now he's had great exposure and is almost guaranteed to be offered a record deal or a West End show.
Title: X factor
Post by: oldspice on December 17, 2007, 06:56:49 pm
That's very true. I thought his performance of 'There's a Place For Us' was one of the best I've heard.

Having said that, I think Leon's range is a bit limited. He seems brilliant at the swing-style songs which are very popular just now, but how long will that last? I thought he was very weak when singing mainstream stuff.

Thank God that Same Difference won't be inflicted on us again! They could go straight into a pantomime or a tiny tots programme.

Did anyone else think their relationship came across as slightly unwholesome?

Yes, there was something slightly incestuous about them. Mind you, apparently after one of the performances Dermot gave the girl a kiss, then he gave the brother a kiss as a joke, and he punched the air in delight...

Yes, several - people have made that comment at work. Also, when she appeared on Strictly Come Dancing she had a perculiar dress on that made her look like a fancy lamp shade. Who on earth is dressing her??

I hate to say it as I love Kylie, but she's looked a bit mutton dressed as lamb the last couple of times I've seen her.

I think the song they chose for the winning single is a disaster. It was a bland song when Whitney and Mariah did it, and when two singers of that standard can't bring it to life, what hope does a Scottish shop assistant have?
