A friend told me today that her daughter had joined a forum recently (I don't know what it was about) and got chatty with another member. After a while they exchanged more details about themselves and realised that they knew each other and were in fact first cousins!
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I also met somebody at a convention who turned out to be a relation.

Many years ago, my then fiance worked for an oil company. One day he was called to reception to see a client who had the same surname as me (I had an VERY unusual surname). She was from Australia and, intrigued by the name. He asked her if she would meet me to see if we were related. It turned out that our great-grandfathers had been brothers. Hers had emigrated to Australia from the Suffolk village where some of my relatives still live!

Was your name local to the area you lived in Oldspice? Have you looked at Spatial-Literacy.org? I find that fascinating.

My maiden name is found mostly in a group of villages around Westleton and Dunwich in Suffolk and also in parts of the east coast of Scotland because it is believed members of the family originally sailed from Scandanavia and landed on the east coast, then some of them sailed up the coast to Scotland. We are talking of five hundred years ago or more though.
I have heard of the website but haven't been on it yet.

Sounds fascinating - did you have to change it for something boring when you got married? I love unusual names but when I first heard my husband's I fell about laughing, never dreaming I'd end up with it myself!

isn't it Mr. Cup?

I think T.Cup would be a good name.

Yes, I did change it for something quite ordinary - thank goodness! I got teased a lot about my former name and even adults used to smirk when I had to gove my name. It's nice to be ordinary now!
