Who ate fish today and did you cook it yourself or go to the fish and chip shop? I saw atleast 50 people queueing at our local chippie.
-
I am having smoked Haddock pie with vegetables and mashed potatoes, and B/F is cooking.
He's a great cook too so it should be YUM!!

You didn't say Loulou, did you see these people because they were in front of you in the queue or were you just passing on your way home from the fish monger?

-
it's a tradition i sadly gave a miss to this year. had roast beef instead.
-
I never quite understood the significance of this. I don't eat fish anyway, but I don't see the point in following this ritual unless you are religious.
-
did that happen at Easter?
he was DIED at easter?
-
It was the crucifixion, yes.
-
I must admit I hadn't given it a thought. I am not religious and the fish thing was just a coincidence.
Loulou asked who was eating fish today, and I am, so I replied.
Is it a religious reason people eat fish on Friday's then? I didn't know that. I thought it was because that was when the fishing boats came back in and there was loads of fish to be had.

Thanks Smurfboy.

Just as a matter of interest does anyone know why religious people eat fish on Friday's?
-
There now see I thought Easter was when christians celebrated the fact that Jesus wasn't dead but had risen again.
There's a word for that but I can't remember what it is!!!!

-
Resurrection.
You are half right Scarlet - Good Firday marks the crucifixion, Easter Sunday is when the resurrection supposedly occured.
-
is Monday when he went Devon?
-
We quite often have fish and chips on Fridays, just because everybody's always in a hurry. Didn't today though - Roast Lamb.

Ahhh that makes sense. Now I get why they have to have so many days to celebrate it.
Thanks Smurfboy.

Love the idea of him going down to Devon on the Monday 623.

If he was going to do that nowadays though he'd have to set off really early.

why the all power ( NON god - jesus is not a god! )
coudl just clear the traffic and get to devon in plenty of time!
-
Jesus was the Son of God. We always had fish every Friday when I was a child and would NEVER have eaten meat on Good Friday. My parents were Christians and we had to go to church on Good Friday. After they died I carried on that tradition until I started to work full time and didn't get Good Friday off. I did not have fish yesterday - we used up some ready meals we had sitting around.
I like Easter better than Christmas as I think it is a very moving and spiritual festival.

I do know he was the son of god, but he was not a god

Not so much a parting of the Red Sea, more a parting of the red volvo's?

I was just looking out of the window as I work on the fish quay. It is always busy on a Friday as it seems to be tradition to eat fish and chips on Fridays.
I had trout and cooked it myself.

Why is that? (I mean why is a tradition not to eat meat, not why do you follow the tradtion.)
-

Oh I love well cooked fresh trout.
Fried in butter with thyme and basil and served with mushrooms and salad.
My brother used to fish and he was always coming home with trout. It's delicious.
What do you do on the quay? Is it smelly? I'm not trying to be personal I just mean does the environment smell fishy.
I have always imagined it would but I have never been to a busy working quay so I'm curious.

I don't know really, it's a strange idea and you would think it would be bread you can't eat on the day he died because bread symbolises the body of Christ and his sacrifice. There are a lot of superstitions based around Fridays and some of them originate from Pagan beliefs and
cross over with Christian teaching.
-
I just read this.
I am no wiser....
-
has thsi got anything to do with the 5 fish and 5 bread and the feeding of the 5000 people?
-
I do know he was the son of god, but he was not a god
I don't think anyone was suggesting Jesus was a God? Good Friday is important because, as the son of God, Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice to save the world from sin. That is the Christian teaching. Of course, not everyone believes this, but in a country with Christianity as its chosen faith, the holidays will be organised around these dates. Personally, although I am no longer a practising Christian, I feel Good Friday and Easter Sunday should be kept special for a variety of reasons, one being a chance for people to reflect, take a rest and re-fuel their batteries.

Yep it smells very fishy as there are many fish and chip shops but mainly wet fish shops with men filleting fish all day long. It's a busy place with the fishing boats. I work in an office above an Italian restaurant so I smell garlic all day which is quite nice.
-
Oh that's nice to work somewhere that smells good.
One of my friends used to live above a real Italian pizza place (they smell totally different from places like Pizza Hut) and I was always hungry.
The smell of fresh canelloni and tagliatelli was so yummy. Oh I feel hungry now just remembering it.
