A nearby shop sells 'double yoke eggs'. How does that work then? Does one need a special kind of hen to produce these? loulou2007-03-15 18:03:16

No, it would just be twins.

I've had double yolk eggs but I thought they were just a freak of nature - how you can tell before they're cracked open I don't know.

When I was about 15 I cracked open an egg and inside was another complete egg with shell. It was only 50% normal size but was in every other way normal. I am an ornithologist and I don't honestly know how this can happen.

I think they can tell from the size of egg in relation to the age of the bird it came from but ive seen lights being used to see the yolk of eggs while still in shells. I guess theres so many chickens in poultry farms that twins dont seem so rare. I think ive only seen it once or twice in my life time though

tesco do boxes of all double yolk eggs. Younger birds are more likely to produce eggs with double yolks, i think they pass them in front of a strong light to show how many yolks there are ( the eggs not the birds
). Just dragged that from the depths of my brain having seen something about egg farming on tv years ago so i hope im remembering right

I have never heard of these eggs but they must be expensive if every one has to be checked by looking at it in front of a light?
They were saying on the news this morning that for years supermarkets have been selling battery eggs as free-range or even organic.
