Title: Forum problems
Post by: on March 04, 2007, 01:33:02 pm
Chocadmin, I am experiencing problems with the new forum. I cannot upload images from my hard drive.  Holding down the control key makes no difference, I don't have a pop-up blocker.  Also I can only see half of some people's posts, they just finish in mid air.  I have a Netscape browser and it migjht not be compatible with the new forum.  This means that I can't read what people are saying and will not be able to reply.  I can do it from work but not very often.  So it's bye bye Bounty.   bounty hunter2007-03-04 13:38:05

See you in a few days disguised as a lesbian then!

I notice now that some posts are condensed into their own window with a scroll bar.  Perhaps, I'm not done after all.  I'm not going to do the lesbian thing again.  I'm a reformed character.  Chocadmin doesn't want any naughties.

Well I don't mind a bit of naughties as long as it's in good taste Wink
I'll compare the differences between the old version of the forum and the new and see if I can hack something in between.

No, I have Netscape that's the problem. But why wasn't it a problem with the old forum.  I'm really pissed off that I can't partake in the forum properly.

Patience is a virtue.

Anyway I'm sure there's plenty of other forums where you can post pics of the eclipse.

It's probably the IFRAME in the image upload that's causing problems (it enables you to view images you've previously uploaded). I'll take it out later tonight.

I think he means there are certain things admin can do that general users can't - therefore if Mrs Choc can do something using her account, the rest of us should be able to.

Absolutely right smurfy.
She's getting the 'no permission' error so I'll try and track that down.

OK, I've worked out some of the problems - I think.
There may still be issues with editing/deleting posts.

First - it seems the hosting provider is using clustered servers - this is good for performance but because some of my code is rather old it doesn't check that this is going on so in effect you can be instantly logged out. That's the cause of the occaisional permission error, only solution is to refresh the forum page (or depending on how you've setup your login you may need to relogin to the site).

Second - for some reason the author of the forum software changed the path that files were saved in (i.e. they weren't 'per user') I switched this back but because the author also added saving to a temp folder first this caused problems where a user hadn't previously uploaded anything. There were also some general issues mapping the path to files.

Long story short I think/hope the image upload is usable, if you get the permission error I'm sorry I'll try and come up with a quick solution to that problem over the coming weekend.

Probably due to the server clustering thats going on. I don't know why the forum is affected (perhaps its because of my login code which isn't written to cope with server clusters). gc did you get the access denied message like 623?

Not really a problem but just wondered why we get so many more guests on the new forum?  As I write, I am the only member on here but there are 17 guests!  I find it quite intimidating.

It's probably search engines. They were always there on the old version of the forum but it didn't list them as such. I've added a file to the site to tell search engines not to index the forum but it could take as much as a month for them to realise this and stop indexing it.
If the number of guests hasn't gone down in another week or so I'll look up how to get the offending search engines to specifically reindex the whole site, which will force them to look at the file that tells them not to look at the forum - if that makes sense.

Also we do have plenty of guest users who browse the site and may or may not have an account (the 17k+ page views per day can't all be those of us with logins Wink).

I appreciate there were always lots of guests browsing and I wouldn't like to put anybody off from joining our happy throng but at the moment there are 23 of them and I feel like Big Brother is watching me, just waiting for my next post!

Consider that your audience Tongue (most are still search engines tho)
