Title: Bananas
Post by: kevvosa on February 06, 2007, 11:58:51 am
If you're eating a banana and there's a black patch on it, do you still eat it? I'm quite sure it's safe to do so yet I always cut around it and throw it away.

I have gone off bananas at the moment. But when I do eat bananas I eat the black bits unless they are really mushy then I wipe that bit out.

No I never eat the black bit although I'm sure it wouldn't harm you.

I think the black bits are only where the banana has been bruised so probably wouldn't do you any harm at all.  Having said that, I always cut them out!

I suppose it's gut instinct not to eat something that looks mouldy. Which is why I have never tasted certain types of cheese.

I hardly ever just eat a banana, but love them in sandwiches.

Never have eaten the black bits though. Even my gran, when I was small, used to cut them out and throw them away before she gave me the banana.

Only time I would consider using black bits is if I was cooking with bananas or making a smoothie.

The black bits are quite safe. It is just sugar. I only eat cooked bananas. They are fantastic grilled with bacon wrapped around them.

I must try that.  I'm still a fan of crunchy peanut butter and banana toasties.  When I'm allowed of course.

They had people dressed as various fruits, including bananas, in Brum on Sunday giving away free fruit. Unfortunately whoever designed the costumes decided the bananas should be half-peeled, giving them white spiky heads... which made them look like the Ku Klux Klan.

Banana and crisp sandwiches are nice.  The black part on over ripe bananas are caused by a substance called banafrin and is completely harmless.

I tried to search from that dictionary and it came up with this:

No results found for banafrin.

Did you mean fanfaron (in dictionary) or Manfrin (in encyclopedia)?

If your bananas do turn black before you eat them, simply
throw them in the freezer. When you have enough (2-3) thaw them out and
make banana bread. It works wonderfully and is a good use for yucky
looking bananas.

I can remember things that happened ages ago but unfortunately I suffer short term memory loss, so I can't remember thinking that GC did a malteser trick

Sometimes if I'm in town talking to someone we completely forget where we're going and end up walking into shops we don't want to be in.
