So everyone's rushing down to the beaches to loot items varying from BMW motorbikes to nappies? Disapproval all round from the press and TV but would most of us do it if we could? I've been keeping a lookout (for safely reasons obviously) but nothing has come this far along the coast yet....
Cherry, what about you?
I think something getting washed up on the beach where you were walking and picking it up is different to visiting that specific place and deliberately taking stuff.
Some of the stolen stuff is already appearing on auction sites. It doesn't surprise me, but I do think it's sad. Particularly since not all the stuff was goods, some of it was possessions of people who were moving abroad and the looters still thought it was a free for all.
I am in two minds about this.
Is it stealing or salvage? I am honestly not sure.
I would find it too much to take personal things like jewellery and such but furniture and that motorbike......... Oooooo the motorbike!
I wouldn't. I bet they're all mindless oiks. The same lot who DIDN'T complain about Jade Goody
How many times did you complain?
Are you a frustrated ex-biker too Velvet?![]()
I am.
I would love another bike, but it's out of the question at the moment. Ah well.
Obviously you too Goldencup?
I could only have dreamed of a BMW though, even before I had a family!
I haven't heard about this - what happened?Seriously? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/6293307.stm

Yes, me too. I had many bikes but the biggest I managed was a Honda 400/4 as I'm not very tall and couldn't touch the ground on anything bigger. I did once ride a Police BMW on private ground but had to be 'caught' when I stopped!

I have seen lots of bikers who can't touch the floor ... particularly at traffic lights when they crawl really slowly in order not to have to stop. Once I saw a biker topple over sideways because he couldn't touch the floor at traffic lights and the bike was so big he needed 2 peoples' help to lift it upright

Ooooh my first boyfriend rode a Honda 400/4 (she was cherry red and I named her Genevieve, he said I was daft for naming her but I was 14 and I didn't care!
). They have remained my favourite bike and I would love one. I have promised myself that as soon as I get the little one to school I will save up for one.
wow what a naff up that post turned out to be. I messed that up big time, but I'm sure everyone knew it was supposed to read.

Can anyone tell me how to edit posts when you make mistakes like that?
Thanks.

You have to have reached a certain number of posts before you get an edit button.
Thankyou Smurfboy.

I thought maybe you were being sarcastic; it was the headline on all the TV and radio news for 3 days so I was surprised you never heard about it.
I see
Apparently now the shipping company is going to pay for the whole clean up operation (including all the mess the looters made)
OK is that really good of the shipping company to pick up the tab or only what they should do under the circumstances?
I'm not sure they should be held responsible for the mess the looters made, but then if the accident hadn't happened there wouldn't have been anything for them to make a mess with, and of course if the shipping company doesn't pay then it will be left to the tax payers of the community which would be completely wrong.
So I say Yay shipping company, and I hope their bill includes extra money for all those hard working people I saw on the news cleaning up those poor birds. What a task that looked. How dedicated they must be.
Indeed, I wondered if the gesture from the shipping company is any indication of blame as to how the ship came to be on the rocks in the first place.
If the Police had cordoned the area off sooner the looting and the impact of the looting could have been minimised, but if the Police footed some of the bill it would have effectively been up to the taxpayers to pay as well.
It's still easy to find debris from the ship which deposited its load of shredded plastic when it crashed into the cliffs and that was years ago. Shipwrecks are not easy things to clean up.

I wondered that myself. Has anyone actually said why it happened?
I hope they do a proper job, and spend the necessary amount of time on it. A lot of the time they cut corners on these clear ups and although obviously the area never actually gets back to the way it was before, if enough attention to detail is paid right from the start then the final impact can be kept to a minimum.
