Title: miniature donkey
Post by: loulou on January 03, 2007, 10:52:53 pm
I really want this donkey. I may adopt one. It's £15 a year and I get a newsletter and a photo. But the trouble with adopting one is there will be a 100 more people paying to adopt the same donkey and I want one of my own.

So do you mean that by adopting it you won't get to see it in person?

You can usually visit an animal you have adopted.

I adore donkeys too lou, which is strange becasue I don't much care for horses but donkeys seem different somehow.

You can visit the donkey sanctuary. There's one in Ireland.

What's the difference between an Ass and a Donkey?

No smutty answers.

This was a question on QI not that long ago. IIRC I don't think there is a difference. They are the same creature but if anything is different about them it's that the ass is wild and the donkey is domesticated. And I remember them saying that donkey used to pronounced differently, like monkey but with a d.

So what's a mule?

A mule is a cross between a male donkey and a female horse.

And although you haven't asked, the website I found said that when you cross a female donkey and a male horse you get a hinney.

The site also said that mules and hinneys are sterile hybrids, which means they cannot reproduce. A tiny percentage of the females have had foals but this is considered a freak genetic accident.

How awful is that? It just goes to show that mother nature should not be messed with.
