Title: Kettles
Post by: kevvosa on December 06, 2006, 08:34:03 am
I bought a new kettle a few weeks back and it has ALREADY broken! Which means I have to buy yet another one (have bought at least 4 this year so far). Ok, so I did buy a cheap one from Poundstrecther, but still.

How much did you pay for your kettle and how long has it lasted? It seems to me that the new cordless ones are rubbish - when I used to have one with a cord on, it lasted for years!

My £4.50 Tesco one is doing well. My parents' £40 stainless steel Morphy Richards one has been replaced twice. I agree about the cordless thing, the ones with cords lasted much longer.

Is it one of the 'Tesco Value' ones? I've heard that cheaper kettles arent as good as the electrics in them are poorly made.

I bought a new one from Argos - should have been 9.99 but was reduced to 6.60  Now I hope this one lasts.

My Russell Hobbs cordless kettle wasn't very expensive (can't remember how much exactly) and I've had it about five years.

I paid £40 for my kettle - it's a Morphy Richards. I didn't pay for the quality; it was just for the colour smurfboy39057.8356944444

Coffee machine ads on TV are getting as bad as toy ads... there are so many different coffee machines and they seem to be on TV every other ad break... nearly as bad as DFS or that stupid M&S food woman

I agree that cordless kettles do not last long. I've had several. At the moment I am using a Marks and  Spencer one I bought for £10 about a year ago.

I go through irons and vacuum cleaners very fast. i am on about one steam iron per year at the moment.

Oh and vacuum cleaners, I had to buy a new one of those last week too.

I told you so. I've had mine almost a year and now have no need for a kettle. No one can make tea as good as this.

£25 - it's the manual one with two dials. One with a digital timer will set you back £29

Are they worth it if you don't like coffee? You mentioned they make tea (which I didn't know they did) can they do other drinks as well, such as hot chocolate?

Our Morphy Richards was bought from John Lewis for £19 five years ago and is still going strong. Broadening it a little, my Father bought my mother a Phillips toaster in 1971 and it still makes perfect toast.  It was our only toaster until about three years ago and we used it every day!  It now has gone into semi-retirement after we bought a brand new Phillips, but it's not quite the same as Mr toasty.

I bought a really basic one like that from Asda a couple of years ago and it's still going strong - I didn't expect it to last more than a few months.  I have a theory that the less gadgets appliances have on them, the fewer things there are to go wrong.

Yes I do not drink coffee at all but it makes nice tea and lovely suchard hot chocolate. There's a few different teas available: peppermint, earl grey, orange and breakfast.

Don they make any other hot chocolate other than Suchard?

No. Just suchard.

I couldn't be doing with that, I like variety.

Well as they are introducing their different flavoured teas and different coffees maybe they will introduce another hot chocolate.

I suppose it doesn't matter, cos you could have the machine and a kettle for all hot chocolates that can't be made using the machine.

Not with a kitchen as small as mine.I threw my kettle away. I could always boil a pan of water.

I love my electric blanket. Talking of appliances lasting a long time, that is at least twenty years old and still going strong.

Strangely enough I haven't had any extra blankets or a hot water bottle yet this year. Its been a mild Winter.

Do you unplug your electric blanket before getting into bed? I've never had one.

I'd be scared of getting electrocuted or something. When I was young I heard that someones electric blanket caught fire so it's put me off for life.

I like to get into a cold bed even in winter... but I am sitting here with the heating on and a hot water bottle on my lap and it is nearly lunch time!!

I have always had an electric blanket too Smurfy. They are great and do last a long time, except I had a new one recently since a spring from my matress went straight though the old one, eek! My new blanket is one of those extra fleecy ones you can leave switched on (on low, of course) all night

My cousin had one that caught on fire but that was about 30 years back - I think these days they're much safer. I leave mine on low all night.

You are still supposed to get the things serviced though.  I wouldn't like to use one that was 20 years old.

It's lasted more than twice as long as the one I bought from Argos to take to uni.

I don't trust electrical items from Argos since my hairdryer, iron and kettle all broke within 2 weeks.
