Title: UK’s first-ever sweet sandwich
Post by: kevvosa on November 27, 2006, 10:45:00 pm

UK's first-ever sweet sandwich goes on sale

The first ever commercially-made
sweet sandwich has gone on sale in Tesco, with the company having an
eight-year-old boy to thank for the idea.

Shane
Monaghan from Stourbridge in the West Midlands came up with the
creation of a sandwich that is made from a banana and chocolate filling
and chocolate bread.

"Shane's creation is a stroke of genius and
taps into a market that, until now, has been totally ignored and which
hasn't even been considered," said James Cornish, Tesco sandwich buyer.

"The
concept of the sandwich came about in the mid-1700s and was created as
a simple snack but it's amazing that in 250 years no food manufacturer
has ever considered a sweet version," Mr Cornish continued.

Shane,
who has cerebal palsy which renders him unable to walk, contacted Tesco
via the Whizz-Kidz charity, and was challenged to provide his own
solution to Tesco's lack of child-based sandwich products.

"I can't wait until I can buy one and not have to make it or clear up," he commented.

My mum used to give me chocolate spread and banana sandwiches over forty years ago! And haven't they ever heard of that war-time staple - a jam sandwich???? (Jam? In a sandwich? The dirty ........)

My dad eats banana and cheese sandwiches  Personally I don't like sweet and savoury together. As this new sandwich as sweet bread it might be alright though not in any hurry to try it ...

I think it sounds nice. I used to have toasted sandwiches with chocolate spread in and they were gorgeous.

But wouldn't the banana go brown if it was sliced and put in a sandwich?

Yes, it does but so what?

Perhaps by banana and chocolate filling them actually mean banana and chocolate 'paste' or something. Then again these days I'm sure they can put additives in banana so it doesn't go brown.

I suppose the chocolate bread is unusual for a ready-made sandwich, but the idea that no one has ever made a sweet sandwich before is ridiculous. As Oldspice said, jam, banana and chocolate spread are popular sandwich fillings, as is honey.

Here's a question - if the bread is sweet and the filling is sweet, what makes it a sandwich and not a cake?

I think what they mean is that commercially-made sweet sandwiches have never been made before:

"The

a simple snack but it's amazing that in 250 years no food manufacturer
has ever considered a sweet version

Well cakes are different from bread, I think what they're talking about here is using a sweet 'flavoured' bread.

I don't think it would be much different.

I bet it ends up in the cake aisle.

It can end up in the bin as far as I'm concerned.  If I want a sweet sandwich, I'll make it fresh myself.  As said earlier, it would have to contain loads of additives if it has banana in it.

To be honest it's best to make all sandwiches yourself, the ones you buy from shops are full of fat, additives and other crap.

I saw it tonight and that's exactly what it's like. BTW, if you fancy one pull your finger out - they're limited edition.

I've decided it sounds horrible now. Chocolate spread is fine but banana paste?

It was all mixed in with the chocolate spread. They had one reduced and I was tempted to try it, but I'm supposed to be dieting and decided I wasn't wasting the calories on it.

I have to say it sounds delightful.

Sweet 'chocolate flavoured' bread.  'Chocolate flavoured' sandwich spread and banana that has been 'messed about with' so it doesn't go brown.

All I can say to that thought is ............YUM

I don't think one will be finding it's way into my shopping trolley any time soon and if as you say they are a limited edition then I may just miss out all together.

Ahhh poor heart broken me. I will have to be strong and hope the feeling soon passes.

Velvet.

Hi Velvet. What a great name. Welcome.

I still don't think this is an original idea. In France a few years ago, we were offered Brioche (sweet bread) with butter and jam or you could have that horrible hazelnut/chocolate spread on it.

I understand that commercially produced sweet sandwiches are a new idea, but the idea of a sweet bread and sweet filling foes back at least decades.

I was at Tesco yesterday and I didn't see them. I was looking in the sandwich fridges ... that is where they are kept, isn't it?

As WJP said, you can get chocolate and marshmallow pizzas - Asda used to sell them for one. They used to make apple crumble ones too.

Were they any good? When I did cooking at school some of the kids made sweet pizzas but I always thought it sounded horrible.

I always thought they ought to make birthday pizzas - I suggested it to the Asda magazine once.  So many kids don't like cake and you could easily stick candle holders in a pizza!

Just looked in my local takeaway leaflet and it has chocolate and marshmallow pizza, banana and chocolate pizza and fruit pizza!

I loved them at the time, but whether I would now is another matter. This was in around 1990 - they were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles branded!

I have looked at the sandwich label and there are no nasty things in it! And the label looks like they have used the tesco own brand chocolate spread and chunks of banana

And I had one and though it was lovely. Anybody else tried it?
