Confirmed sighting: Cruga Biltong
Posted: 20:00 Tue 31-Oct-2006. Price: £1.99/ 34g bag. Location: Newsagent near Kentish Town tube. Sub-flavours: Beef, Chilli Beef, Peppered Beef, "Beersticks", Ostrich, Kudu. Nutritional unusualness: As little as 3.6g fat per 100g (Ostrich), no salt content specified.
Snackspot reports: I know they're madly expensive, but I was going to a book launch party and wasn't sure if they were going to be serving food, so I took along a packet each of Ostrich and Kudu, just in case. And I'm glad I did - not only were the salami-like slices a nourishing nibble between the intermittent trays of canapes, but I was approached by complete strangers for most of the evening, inquiring [my paraphrase] "Are you eating biltong? Bring it on!" There wasn't much between them, but ultimately we preferred the Ostrich to the Kudu, the latter bearing little trace of its antelope-like origins.

The bloody dirty b******s.

Biltong's a delicacy in South Africa; similar to the Americans eating jerky.
