Title: No smoking in cartoons.
Post by: loulou on August 27, 2006, 02:34:11 am
The cartoon duo Tom and Jerry have been attacked for promoting smoking. This tough new stance on animation arose after a viewer of Boomerang, the digital children’s channel, complained to the watchdog Ofcom about two episodes of Tom and Jerry which featured central characters smoking cigarettes and cigars. This has led to Turner Broadcasting, the company that holds Boomerang’s licence, editing smoking scenes out of more than 1,700 Hanna-Barbera cartoons, including Scooby Doo and The Flintstones.

I have to say, I'm not in favour of the nanny state but I agree completely with this policy.  ANYTHING that discourages children from smoking has to be good.

Is there any proof that smoking in cartoons encourages children to smoke? What about children whose parents are smokers? Should their parents be banned from smoking?

Anyone who continues to smoke after becoming a parent is selfish.

It certainly won't discourage them Kev. Why do you thinks toys, swerts and Mickey D love to advertise during kids tv.

Children ARE impressionable and if they see a cartoon character doing something, they can be apt to copy.

Parents?

yes.

Everyone?

 Absolutely.

I don't see how a cat smoking a cigar is going to encourage a child to smoke.

If smoking must be banned then surely all acts of violence should be too.

Quite possibly, but then I like acts of violence!

I can think of one or two people I would like to demonstrate the moves to.

I think children might copy smoking rather than smashing someone over the head with an iron or wrapping them up in a venetian blind.

However, having said that a four year old boy in Hull has narrowly avoided death after being tied to a tree by an eleven year-old and being smashed over the head by a house brick!

I blame the parents.

I think several thing influence whether a child will smoke and the strongest influence must be whether parents and other people around the child are smoking. Children exposed to cigarette smoke from an early age have a tolerance for it and see its value as a passifier.

I was rarely exposed to cigarette smoke and cannot easily tolerate it. Same goes for my husband. Result? We do not smoke - and our children hate cigarette smoke so their don't smoke either.

I grew up with a mum who hated smoke and a grandad who smoked a lot. I went through a smoking phase as a teenager but it was more of a rebellion sort of thing. I gave up pretty fast as it just cost far too much and I never really enjoyed it.

My Mum and Dad both smoked moderately but it never interested me at all and I've never smoked a cigarette in my life.  Many of my eldest son's friends smoke but he doesn't and he makes his girlfriend smoke out of the window!
