Why is it gay?
Gay doesn't just mean homosexual or bright and carefree it can also mean worthless and stupid. I often say it to people at work if they hide my stapler or something. E.g. 'Look where is it? Stop being gay'

Why is it? It's got no connection to homosexuality has it? If I say 'Don't be gay!' It's not the same as saying 'Don't be a homosexual!' I can't see the problem. Language is a living thing, words change and evolve.
There seems to be some feeling abroad on this forum that I am homophobic. I am not.

Bounty I hear kids saying that and think they're pathetic. For a 40 year-old man to do it is sad beyond belief.
My kids went through a phase of using gay in this way and I let them know my opinion in no uncertain terms. They don't do it any more.

Bounty, do you not realise that the use of 'gay' to denote negative things like this is a direct reference to the negative way in which many people see homosexuality? It's a put-down of homosexuality, equating it to things that are 'worthless and stupid' in you own words.
