Title: accents
Post by: oldspice on June 23, 2006, 04:59:36 pm

I can't remember if we've done this before (but at least I won't be told off by ChocAdmin if we have!) but how many of us have regional accents? I know we have people on here from a diverse range of regions but do you all speak the local dialect? Mine in now a strange mixture of better-than-average London meets a bit of Fens!

I think mine is quite a strong Brummie accent but others disagree. I love my accent and it drives me mad when people sl*g it off - there are other accents I find far more unpleasant.

I think the Brummie accent suffers from exageration when actors/presenters put on an 'everyone's-idea-of Brummie" accent.

I love the Geordie accent. It's warm and friendly like.

Seriously, I don't particularly like the Irish accent because a) everyone makes such a fuss about it and b) I lived with a girl from Cork for nine months and she was an evil bitch, so the accent always makes me think of her.

My mam came from Sussex and my dad from Newcastle . I grew up in Sunderland and people say I have  a very strong Northern accent (not geordie). GC says I sound like someone from Byker Grove. My mam still has her southern accent and is constantly being asked if she is here on holiday.

I have consciously changed the way I speak over the years, now I don't have to think about it.  My girlfriend thinks I'm snobby because I say carstle and not castle.

I don't have any feelings about my genealogy, but I don't like the Nottingham accent.  It's one of the most horrid, chavvy accents in the country.

I don't really have much of an accent. There is a definite way of saying things in a janner (Plymouthian) way but it's not really an accent. In fact have never met anyone from Cornwall or Devon with a stereotypical 'westcountry' accent.

Like Oldspice said about the Brummie accent, I think the West Country accent has been charicatured by comedians and is not as strong in 'real life'.

I know a very intelligent woman from Penzance who sounds exactly like Alice from the Vicar of Dibley.

Conversely I know somebody with perfect 'received pronunciation' who is extremely lacking in the commonsense department.  That's the trouble with accents - they can lead people to make assumptions!

Well I have.  There are a lot of people I see when I go to Kingsbridge that I have a real problem understanding until I get 'tuned in'.
