Title: Chocolate Conscience
Post by: smarties on December 13, 2004, 12:40:39 pm
Having read the stories regarding chocolate production, I would like to ask you guys the following loaded question:

Would you preffer cheaper chocolate or better wages and conditions for those working in the chocolate producing countries?

Do you consider this, or just are more focussed on the output of the chocolate industry?

Is anybody up for putting some kind of pressure on the major
manufacturers of chocolate to cream [pun intended] less profits and
support the workers?

Is FairTrade a good organisation for this? How can we convince ourselves, and the companies, to pass the profits on?

We live in a captalist society.  Companies like Cadburys and Nestle are there to make chocolate and provide profits for their shareholders.

Naturally the cocoa bean producers should get a fair price for their crop.   Is there evidence that they are not?

Chocolate companies invest millions of dollars into tools and machinery to turn bitter cocoa beans into delicious chocolate bars.

I think chocolate companies have to pay tax to government and import-export expense also. So how can they provide to people at cheap rate?
