On the continent, most people rent their homes. Rents are reasonable and the properties are decent. Same goes for Aussie. Plenty of decent, affordable homes to rent.
What we need is decent, affordable housing.
I thought John Prescott was actually doing something about this with the '£60,000 house' policy - but now it turns out that the houses are only being BUILT for that, and will be sold at market rate. Yes, there will be some designated affordable housing in the developments for key workers, but surely the only people who profit from the other houses in this scheme will be developers?!
Well, if they pay their rent what does it matter?
Not the point. They are spending £500 million pounds on revamping the market square while 200 yards away a man was critically injured after being stabbed because there's not enough police. The council have their priorities wrong. Nottingham is an awful place.
It ought to be renamed Chavingham
It's PEOPLE who make places bad. Take Peterborough. It's a beautiful city with a well-planned city centre, a stunning river bank and a brilliant roads system. The surrounding areas are landscaped and the housing stock very good. There are no tower-blocks. What do people do? Set light to cars, put lighted rags through people's doors, throw rubbish into the street, fight, mug, rob and generally behave like savages. The council could pave the streets with red carpets and furnish each house with Conran designed furniture and people would still smash things up and moan.
Solution: Build more prisons, build them bigger and fill them up.

And who pays for all this?
the prison;s

only give them 1 meaul a day instead of 3 plus it will give them FREE labour skills
And perhaps we should keep them chained to the radiator a'la Terry Waite? And feed them dung - that would save on meals altogether!

I like the cut of your jib, young man. With that sort of "can do" attitude you'll go far!

And who pays for all this?
Who cares. The taxpayer. I'd sooner pay an extra penny on my tax and be able to walk the streets safely.
