In Debenhams the other day they had a few things going on for charity. One was a huge chocolate fountain and they were charging people to dip biscuits/marshmallows in it. Anyway one of the shop assistants told me that every so often they were pouring vegetable oil in to keep the choc flowing and give it a shiny look. I felt sick. does anyone know if there is a proper reason for adding oil to the chocolate? Perhaps it is to stop it resetting?
-
All chocolate needs some fat to give it a lovely smooth texture. Proper chocolate uses cocoa butter but this is expensive. That's why most high street chocolate have vegetable oil in. It's cheap and it's nasty.
Lou, is there somewhere I can send you some chocs from Chocolate Utopia? Your workplace maybe?
-
Vegetable oil has to be added to chocolate fountains to keep it from solidifying - but the higher the coca content, the less oil you need to add.
-
Many Nestle bars are loaded with vegetable oil - that, and too much sugar, is what makes them taste sweet and nasty.
-
Mars and Cadbury's too.
-
Of course, all nasty but we still eat them because we're british and we accept sh*te.

Speak for yourself.

Nobody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to eat them.

I now will only eat Flake, because it is quite nice. It is my only conession to the crap, which is the British chocolate industry. Long Live Chocolate utopia.

Goes in as sh*te and comes out that way, so what difference does it make?

Apart from the fact that dark chocolate tastes so much better. I've
really been put off chocolate fountains now because i was thinking of
hiring one for a function and now it just doesnt seem like such a good
idea.
-
They are good fun but take a lot of preparation.
-
We had one at work for a function last autumn. The company we rented it from sent two people along to keep it going and it was very successful. I saw them filling the fountain with chocolate but never saw any kind of oil going in.
-
They do it discreetly so you don't get funny about it like Lou
-
Ah
I see!
-
I think i'd rather have something else with choc instead because they also seem to be quite expensive
-
There are so many cheap versions on the market now that you may as well buy one rather than hire one.
-
Surely at a function you'd want to hire a big fountain?
-
The thing is that i'll only ever use the fountain once and the function
isn't huge so a smaller fountain is a lot less cost effective than a
large one.

The word is sick and vomit not funny.
-
Why would it make you sick when you eat vegetable oil in every choc bar you eat?
