Title: One hit wonders
Post by: smurfboy on May 22, 2006, 11:16:24 pm

A dance version of 'First Time' by Robin Beck has just been released, which got me thinking about one-hit wonders. Which was your favourite?

I was actually a big fan of the original 'First Time', even though it was a hit because of a Coke advert! From the same year (1988) I love 'Voyage Voyage' by Desireless, and 'I Can't Be With You Tonight' by Judy Boucher from the previous year.

Oh dear. i will have to go way back to remember any one hit wonders. None of the above means a thing to me!

Here is a list of the (often highly eccentric) one hit wonders I remember:

Little Arrows (Leepey Lee)

Tiptoe through the Tulips (Tiny Tim)

Something in the Air (Thunderclap Newman)

Have I the Right (Honeycombs)

I should have known better (Jim Diamond)

Happy Talk (Captain Sensible - actually he was the lead singer of The Damned)

Grandma we love you (St Winifred's School Choir)

Seven Tears (Gombay Dance Band??)

Day Trip to Bangor (some farty old folk band)

Matchstick Men and Matchstick Cats & Dogs (Brian and Michael??)

I like sugar sugar too, oldspice! My favourites are Buggles "Video killed the radio star" Aneka "Japanese Boy" and Nena "99 Red Balloons"

There was a top 50 one hit wonders show on c4 a few weeks ago. The top 5 was not very good, including things such as Afroman "Beacuse I got high". The winner was Carl Douglas "Kung fu fighting".

Was it something I said, or done? That made him pack his bags up and run? Could it be my lover is go-one? It's breaking up my happy home...
