I love artichokes but they are a nightmare to prepare. Therefore I only buy them tinned or in olive oil.

The only place I ever had artichoke was in Israel on kibbutz so I assume it was Jerusalem variety.

mmmm artichokes, love them, especially artichoke hearts marinaded in garlicky/herby olive oil.

The one I ate was a greeny purple colour and was about the size of a Grapefruit but flatter.  What sort was that?

That's right, they do have a purple tinge to them. You almost certainly ate a globe artichoke in Israel Bounty. The other variety are nothing to do with Jerusalem, despite their name.

Yes, it was a globe.  I was about 20 miles north of Eilat at a place called Yotvata, nowhere near Jarusalem.  I was birdwatching.
