Title: Chopping onions
Post by: kevvosa on May 18, 2006, 10:43:00 am
Anyone else in agony when they chop onions? I got sick of it so I now wear a pair of funky sunglasses when I chop onions, and now, my eyes no longer sting.

Any other methods?

Sucking a spoon whilst chopping.

Putting the onion in the freezer 10 mins before you chop.

Get mum to do it!

The only thing that works for me is to do it a bit at a time before the odour really hits me. Also wash your hands every time you stop, even if it's only for a second - the sooner you wash the juices off the less likely they are to be absorbed into your skin. Otherwise, as Victor Meldrew put it, 'when you pick your nose three weeks later you can still smell it on your fingers'.

623 I have some weird things in my kitchen (including an axe) but swimming goggles there ain't!

When cutting up an onion, don't cut off the end with the roots first. That is where the stuff which makes your eyes water lives.

Do these really work? How does the spoon thing work?

Ive thought about getting swimming goggles, as daft as it sounds.

Smurfy I once told you a good tip for no tears when chopping onions and you've forgot. A crust of bread in your mouth works everytime.

I suck a spoon and it seems to help. Make sure its a teaspoon though! I read that as you are sucking the spoon your tear ducks are pulled tight, not letting that nasty onion in.
