Don't bet on it.

The media will have a field day.

It will be the end of the world for at least a week.

I saw something on the front of the Star this morning in the newsagents.  It said 'wild swan found dead in Scotland.'  The term wild swan tends to refer to the winter visiting species to UK Cygnus colombianus bewicki and C. cygnus. The bird pictured was clearly a C. olor our 'common' swan we see all year round.  So not sure of the veracity of this report. Of course hundreds of birds die every day.  Just because a bird has died doesn't mean it has bird flu.  We'll see.

According to this morning's news the swan was actually found over a week ago. Bird flu has been confirmed but there are various types and it has not yet been confirmed if it is the H5N1 strain.

That's right, there's lots of different types of bird flu so it probably isn't H5N1.

At the moment they are only restricting the movement of poultry.  If there is confirmation that it's the 'deadly' strain them more measures might be put in place.  It is very difficult for humans to get this disease.  Eating well cooked infected poultry is safe.  Feeding infected ducks with bread is safe.  This virus needs to come into direct contact with humans to be passed on a bit like HIV.  If you feed your chickens grain mouth to mouth you are at risk.  If you regularly touch infected poultry you might be at risk.

There is bound to be a panic as generally people are ignorant of the facts. The media is helping to create panic instead of informing people.

Coincidentally there was a lady from the National Aids Trust on the breakfast news this morning, whose research shows the scarily high level of ignorance regarding HIV and AIDS. One in twelve people in this country don't think straight people can become infected with HIV.
