On these dark, cold nights, what do you curl up with? I have just started a book about the Rothschild Buildings in London's east end.
I've just started a new Judy Astley. Her books pretty much all have the same plot (woman with slightly useless husband is trying to put her marriage back together after an affair whilst dealing with unruly teenagers), but she does it so well. I've also got a Margaret Atwood waiting for when I'm in the mood for something heavier.
I've got that but haven't started it yet.
Smurfy - Handmaid's Tale was brilliant
"Vyvyan: Scumbag College, reading comics"

I've got that but haven't started it yet.

I know, I read it at uni - fantastic. Have you read The Blind Assassin? Got loads of bad publicity becuase it won the Booker and everyone said Atwood got it as a 'lifetime acheivement' award, but if you put that out of your mind and just enjoy it, it's very good.
I have recently finished Terry Pratchet's "Going Postal" - most enjoyable.
I do not read a lot of books about the "strife" of women...
Having said that - no matter what someone chooses to read I think it is encouraging that people DO still read - whether it be Radio Times or "Hot Barely Legal Teens" mag!

I amount of times I read on people faceparty profiles under authors comments like: Books, what are they? Don't read? Porn ha ha? I think thats my seeing red topic!
apart form Harry potter ( I like to judge a book after I read it)
I have only ever read Rohal dales tales of teh unepected!
now a day I can never get myslef in to a good book :(
I did but not alot, are you suggeting I start read theses?
Sharon's is the first i have read and would like to read Jordon's before the days oif children i used to read stephen King and alot of the classic library books such as oliver twist, pride and prejudice, black beauty etc...
Chapter 1 - Got my tits out.
Chapter 2 - Got tits made bigger and got them out some more.
Chapter 3 - Shagged every C-lister going, had blind fat baby by footballer. sl*gged him off in the papers a lot.
Chapter 4 - Told the world I'd shagged stuttering pop 'star' whilst up the duff. sl*gged him off in the papers a lot.
Chapter 5 - Met faded plastic pop star on reality show. Shagged him, got up the duff again, got married in ludicrously tacky ceremony.
Chapter 6 - Hinted in the press that maybe I'd shagged Beckham too in the desperate hope of making more cash from the book.
The End (until I run out of money).
I have just finished reading
Swallowing Grandma by Kate Long. Quite a nice read easy going and amusing in a gentle way. It seemed to feature a 'northern style humour' to it, with a sprinkling of angst. Slightly predictable at the end though.
I also recently read The Bad Mothers Handbook by Kate Long. It was her first novel. Similar in style to the second one. A story about a grandmother, a daughter and a grand daughter all living in the same house. Some very witty, observant bits to it.
I am now trying really hard to get into The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. My sister raved about it, and it gets great reviews.... but I just can't get to grips with it's style. This is my second run at it and I'm struggling! Has anyone else read it?
I am now reading 'The Curious Incident With The Dog In The Night Time' by Mark Haddon
I have read that, it's very good
I know what you mean Smurfy - I tend to avoid books like that too. And in the library there is a lot of feeling that nothing that appears on Richard & Judy can possibly be any good which I think is unfair.
I couldn't get into Captain Corelli at all.
Having said that I read 'The Secret Life of Bees' which had a big banner on the front saying it was chosen by Oprah's book club, and I loved that.
I'm reading Kenneth Williams's diaries, after seeing the Fantabulosa! programme on TV. Very good.
I didn't like "The Time Traveller's Wife" - too slow and too sentimental. Couldn't get into Captain Corelli either.
My all-time favourite book is Catch-22 by Joseph Heller.
I have done that recently too - if you can find something decent why pay full price? (Obviously there's the joy of helping the charity too...
)
P.S. Don't mention any of this to Lou...

I use this a lot in my teaching.

See I am cringing now and starting to itch again.
Has anyone read Private Peaceful by Micheal Murpurgo?
It is a stroy about a young soldier in the first world war. It is in diary format, with flashbacks and memories scattered through it.
It's spread over a 24 hour period.
I know it is aimed at teenagers, but I bought it for my son and read it first because I was intreaged. I was moved to tears at the end. I couldn't wait for Ollie to read it so I could discuss it with him. Although he thought it was sad, he didn't feel the same sorrow and injustice as I did, but then he was only 11 at the time.
It's a very quick read, but thought provoking and left me with a lasting insight to some of sad, often innocent and immature, casualities of war

What about the sound track??

The moral of the story is if you can't take criticism then don't post your website on a forum for all to see.
Criticism is fine but insults are not
And how is that relevant?
Did you need to ask that really? I thought it was fairly obvious!
The difference being I stuck to the point we were arguing about (until you pushed it beyond that) and I didn't get any of my little friends to sign up and send you nasty PMs.
You didn't need to Smurfy, you have friends right here.

I think she may have spotted this post!
Lou won't mind I'm sure...
Oxfam is the best charity shop to buy books from as they actually sort them into alphabetical order, so you don't have to rummage for hours and hope.

yes! Our local library often sells book off for 50p or cheaper. I am waiting for the Amulet of Love to appear.
True but I actually meant you can borrow them for nothing!

For only 50p? I'm sure that could make at least 75...

the second one is the time after including the birth and the wedding. That's only been about a year!
I like reading autobiographies but ones which cover a person's lifetime.
Did you see the recent advert for OK!? 'Find out why Jordan and Peter are renewing their vows at Disneyworld!' Erm, let me guess...
Jordan and Peter are renewing their vows at Disneyworld
At Disneyland Paris there is a honeymoon suite!

I have now finished reading 'The Curious Incident with the Dog in the Night Time'.
Did you enjoy it?

Does anyone know where this phrase originally came from? It's obscure to say the least. Oldspice might know.
