Title: New future outlined for the BBC
Post by: on March 14, 2006, 08:56:15 pm

.......The government also urged the BBC to put entertainment at the centre of its mission.

"We do not subscribe to the idea that public service broadcasting should be confined to the 'worthy,'" the report stated. "On the other hand ... the BBC should not chase ratings through derivative or copy-cat programming.".......

"

As well as the corporation's traditional aims to "inform, educate and entertain", the government has set it six new purposes:

  • Sustaining citizenship and civil society
  • Promoting education
  • Stimulating creativity
  • Reflecting the identity of the UK's nations, regions and communities
  • Bringing the world to the UK and the UK to the world
  • Building digital Britain "

'Digital Britain' is just an excuse to whack the licence fee up - most of the increase in licence fees over the past five years has gone into paying for digital TV and radio stations that the majority of us don't have access to or even want. Ditch the licence fee and privatise the BBC! It's all very well blaming new Labour, but it was the Tories who thought it was a good idea for dozens of different companies to own the country's railway system, but that government ownership of a TV station was high priority...
