Title: Fish & Chips
Post by: loulou on February 26, 2006, 10:04:00 pm
When you go to the fish and chip shop what do you buy? I always get fishcake, chips and curry as not a big fish fan. My local chip shop sells haggis. Anyone ever tried it and does your chip shop sell anything different ?.

Have you ever had the mars bar? I remember years ago seeing battered creme eggs in a chip shop but I wasn't brave enough to have one.

I order chips, pickled onion and mayonnaise. Occasionally I have chips with curry sauce. Our chip shop doesn't really do anything unusual, I don't think.

I have chips with plenty of salt and vinegar and a buttered roll.

Loulou what are you trying to do to me?  All this talk of KFC, McD's, BK, Pizza Hut - now fish and chips!  Some of us are trying to diet!!!

Anyway, casting my mind back to the dark ages of 2005, I love fish and chip shops and nearly always have the same thing - vegetarian spring roll, chips and a pea fritter!  Pea fritters seem to be a southern thing.

And by the way I think it is right about haggis containing barley.

My chip shop does pea fritter, pineapple fritter or spam fritter. It doesn't do spring rolls, but I would have those if they were available.

Bizarre but true - thin chips are actually fattier than chunky ones.

Chunky chips are the best. Nothing better than fish and chips. A new chip shop just opened near me but they are terrible.

Some chip shop chips can be horrible. I like them when they are soft in the middle but kind of crunchy on the outside

I haven't eaten in Harry Ramsdons yet.

There is a Harry Ramsdens down the road from me and it definitely isn't anything special.  When you walk past there late at night, the smell coming from the kitchens is horrible!

CC don't bother with Harry Ramsdens. Overpriced and undercooked.

I was going to go into the one in Blackpool when I was there last year but we went to a chippy instead.

I will avoid it in the future. They taste better out of the bag with a wooden fork anyway

Probably not. They use that whitey grey paper now. Still has the same effect though

There is a particularly nice smell of vinegar with newspaper ink that you don't get from the white paper they use now.

I don't like it when they give you your chips in a polyostyrene box. Ruins it.

I liked battered sauages as well. They are horrendously fattening but lovely

how about when thery're served up in a 'cone'. i hate that.
Title: Fish & Chips
Post by: chocolate chick on February 28, 2006, 02:58:10 pm
God I hate that too!

You only get about 10 chips in the cone anyway.
I know its more healthy but if I am having chips, I want loads cos I am being purposely unhealthy!!

we get alot of that 'cone' crap down here, what with it being a seaside town. cant beat the fish, though.

Chips are served in cones as normal practice in the Netherlands. You get a huge blob of mayo on the top few chips and none reaches the chips lower down. Very annoying.

chips, fish, sausages... whatever (!) - should only ever be wrapped very clumsily in greasy paper. its part of what makes it tasty. (preferably newspaper)

That legislation should be scrapped. If we want to eat our chips off newspaper we should be able to!

It's all cardboard boxes in the chip shops here. Not a sign of paper anywhere.

One of our local chippies serves it all posh in a box with a slice of lemon.  The one we usually use wraps it in white paper then a plastic carrier.  It tastes much better from there.

Post by: Cherry_Ripe on March 01, 2006, 10:49:56 am
I got a polystyrene tray, white paper and a plastic carrier bag. The carrier bag gets full of condensation though, you don't want to keep it in there too long!
