Title: Artificial sweetners - dangerous or not?
Post by: kevvosa on February 19, 2006, 08:58:17 pm

What does everyone think? I keep hearing people banging on about dying from cancer if you use artificial sweetner but I think its rubbish. Is there any hard evidence?

Saccharine is banned now isn't it? I don't know if there's any hard evidence.

I agree that the tase isnt always nice but sometimes it's ok. The Fanta and Sprite Z taste fine, but I think they use Splenda, which is a new type of sweetener?

There is quite a lot of evidence actually.  I don't eat anything with sweeteners in it, particularly aspartame which gives me an instant headache.

My friend's husband is a pharmacist and he is always telling us about the chemicals in artificial sweeteners. He doesn't allow their kids to eat certain products because of it.

Just look on the label for any mention of artificial sweeteners, aspartame, nutrasweet etc etc.  The worst offenders are obviously diet drinks but also yogurt and many other food items.  My brother-in-law is also a pharmacist and he wouldn't go near the stuff despite being diabetic.

Well I haven't had any side affects yet.

I tend to do a lot of cooking at home, but I do eat a lot of yogurt.

Although I do consume many things with artifical sweetners in, not always intentially, as it's often hidden in things, I must say I do quetion that something tht synthetic can really be good for you. I know some sweetners are banned in some countries.

In honesty I think there is all sorts of things in our food that probably shouldn't be there. I guess the only way to be sure is to stick to all orgainic fresh produce. But this is sometimes a costly option

I do agree with you there!

Since I have joined WW I have been doing a lot of home made meals and they are far more tastier than what I buy in the shops and I feel better for it inside. Iwas very prone to tummy aches last year but they have since stopped.
