Title: Chips
Post by: smurfboy on September 22, 2005, 02:20:48 pm

Not a choc-related ad, but I'm hoping someone might remember it... it was an ad where children waiting for their dinner sing 'we hope it's chips, it's chips...'

They spoofed it on Rock Profile with Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones singing it.

Yes I remember it.  What about it?  It was for McCains oven chips I think.

I just wondered what it was for and how the rest of the song went. You just don't get good songs in ads anymore. When did anyone last suggest doing the Shake 'n' Vac to put the freshness back?

Description: The 80s provided some cracking adverts, and the McCain Oven Chips one with all the builders in the back of a van, all singing about what they hoped was for tea. Will it be chips, or jacket spuds? Will it be salad or frozen peas? Will it be muchrooms? Fried onion rings? You'll have to wait and see, Hope it's chips, it's chips, We HOPE it's chips, it's chips....

Who remembers the ad for Nimble bread where the girl goes up in the hot air balloon? Or the ad for be-ro flour where the woman is feeding cake to the ducks and they sink because she didn't use be-ro.

I remember the Nimble but not the other.  I love laughing at old TV ads - most of them were truly awful.

Goldencup - was it muchrooms cos the back of the van was crowded - so there wasn't muchroom?

The Nimble ad used that lovely song I can't let Maggie go.

Jonathan King wanted to re-release it when Maggie Thatcher got kicked out but I say Why ruin a good song??

'Muchrooms' wasn't my typo that time - it was a 'copy and paste' from Google - you didn't really think I'd remember all those words did you?

A great song! The group who recorded were called Honeybus and it was a one-hit wonder.

This ad wasn't for chips, it was for something like burgers (I think one of those Birds Eye "chopped and shaped" products).

To the tune of "Que Sera".
