Title: Cindy or Barbie?
Post by: oldspice on August 29, 2005, 10:11:40 pm
Come on girls (or boys if you like) - what did you play with?

Neither - never played with a doll in my life.  I had a train set!

My dad bought me some Betta Build (an early and cheaper version of Lego) and I got so much enjoyment out of that. I designed my own Art Deco inspired houses with curved wall and windows!

I preferred boys toys as well but my cousin passed a pile of Cindy dolls onto me along with home knitted clothes for them. Not very trendy!

Oldspice I have never spoken to anybody else who remembers Betta Build!  I had loads of the stuff - it was see-through wasn't it, with green tiles to make roofs and little doors and windows.

Wasn't is Sindy?

Anyway I didn't have dolls. I had three older brothers and had pass down toys of Scaletrix, Totopoly and Meccano. I didn't wear dresses except on special occasions. I recall I had a lot of Hanna Barbara annuals, Yogi bear stuff. All my brothers friends would outgrow their toys and give me cars and I had a garage. I had a panda, teddy, wooly doll with plastic face and an alligator.

You are right. I think it was Sindy! I had a big brother too but he didn't pass much on to me !

Goldencup - Betta Build was brilliant! Some of my bricks were see through and some were white. Some were cruved so that you could make towers but I used to make half-curved wall al la Art Deco and join all the small windows one on top of another to make a long thin window almost the height of the building. My dad thought i should consider being an architect due to my eye for detail.

What was a Totopoly lou?

And I'm right about the roof tiles aren't I?  I've asked loads of people and they also say I'm imagining it!  Totopoly was a horse racing board game.

Yes you are right goldencup. It was a long track that rolled out and you lined the horses( which were metal and really hurt when you got one off your head)up at the starter line, then had to turn the handle and the horses raced along.

Yes, the Betta Build roof had green tiles. Funnily enough, my husband also had a load of Betta Build. I think it was because Lego came later and was much too expensive for folk like us!

The Totopoly looks good. We did not have many games except for Ludo, Snakes and Ladders and Chess. My dad and his father before him were chess champions.

Never heard of Cindy, but I did have a few Barbies - all of which my older brother beheaded. My favourite toy was a Rainbow Bright doll though.

Never heard of Totopoly either!

We had Scrabble and Mastermind. My dad said we had to play games that got the mind working.

I just found 'betta bilda' (made by Airfix) on ebay and there were those much-loved green roof tiles!  Lego never had proper roof tiles like those.  Anyway I tried to upload the picture but it was of the wrong type or something.
