Title: Scottie Beamed up
Post by: on July 24, 2005, 10:11:40 am
The actor James Doohan who played Scottie in Star Trek died on Wednesday.  He was aged 85.  I'm not a Trekkie, but he was always one of my favourite characters.  Despite sounding Scottish and having a Scottish name he was in fact Canadian and had an eventful military career in WWII being involved in the D-Day landings among other things.

I was surprised to hear he wasn't Scottish too.  Apparently he tried all sorts of accents out for the part and they decided the Scots one sounded most authentic or something.

He did a lot of radio stuff in the 50's apparently and was a master of voices.

Ah.  I went to a play last night where there were only five actors playing about three totally different parts each.  It was brilliant.  They only had seconds to change from one to another and just with a different hat or other accessory plus the change of voice and facial expression, they really looked liked a different person - it was hilarious!

Yes Bounty, it's a very important job these days. We have a marketing department at our college and it's always very busy. They look for publicity opportunities in the local press; organise exhibitions and shows; push out brochures advertising courses; design leaflets, banners and other advertisements to go out locally on/in buses, bus shelters, local newspapers and free supplements and perform hundreds of other tasks to promote business. That's what it's all about these days. Whether you are a museum, theatre or centre of education you have to generate business.

Couldn't agree more - I keep saying that our libraries need marketing (some areas already do) as a lot of people still think they are places full of ancient books where you have to be quiet.  Ours is very noisy, more like an internet cafe (but free!), with all the latest DVDs and computer games plus of course books, and I think that should be publicised.  We had six copies of the new Harry Potter on the day it came out and they just sat there on the shelves!

It's true that in terms of services to the public, lending books is slipping down the list and many people now use their library for family history research, to serf the Internet or to just sit and chat over the daily paper.

I found my local library an excellent source of research material when I was looking at 19th century newspaper reports. They had micro-films of The Times and the local paper for all of the dates I needed. The staff were fantastic too.
