General / TV on Christmas Days in years gone by
« on: December 25, 2013, 09:18:24 pm »
Being at a loose end, I decided to power up the Tardis and visit London Earth in 10 year intervals to see what people were watching on BBC.  It was 4.16pm and I started in 1933.

1933. Try as I might I couldn't actually find anyone watching a TV on Christmas Day 1933, despite doing a full sweep with my EMOD electro magnetic output detector.

1943 Hooray, a TV!  However, it was switched off  :-\

1953 Well What a lot of differences 10 years makes.  TVs everywhere. Well the old EMOD was positively blinking but on further inspection far from every household had one and most people were huddled round the radio.  However, at 4.16pm on 25th December they had on Andy Pandy.  A puppet character in striped pyjamas and a little bear.  Needless to say, it was in black and white.  There didn't appear to be an ITV.

1963 OK, I expected a lot more.  A lot more TVs but not that much on tbh.  At 4.16pm on BBC it was a test card with some different shades of grey bands.  Ho hum.  ITV had a Carols Service.  Nice.

1973 The old EMOD went into over drive.  Nearly everyone has TV and some in colour!  They're watching Billy Smart's Circus!  Over on ITV there's a pantomime of Babes in the Wood.  Christmas TV has arrived!

1983 Whoopee a film!  Treasure Island.  On the other side it's Jason and the Argonauts.  Virtually all TVs are in colour now, especially with all that Yupee money about.

1993 It's Films again!  The afternoon blockbuster is Back to the Future III with Michael J Fox.  The competition meanwhile, are showing The Neverending Story.

2003 The BBC are taking a break from late afternoon films and instead are showing Outtake TV, a programme about Bloopers and scenery that has a life of its own.  The other side have a James Bond film on - Tomorrow Never Dies.  I think ITV win that one.

2013 So we're up to date.  BBC had Toy Story III and ITV showed a cartoon called Tangled.

2023 BBC - 50 Shades of Gray the movie.  ITV - The Sound of Music

2033 Hologramatic TV is here.  Both sides are showing the King's address to the Commonwealth which is now shown at 4pm.

General / Has history been re-written by Stuart Hall, Jimmy Savile et al?
« on: December 25, 2013, 01:27:47 pm »
Has the revelations of child abuse by Gary Glitter and latterly Jimmy Savile, Stuart Hall,  and now (allegedly) Rolf Harris not only re-written history but actually undermined British culture?

The cultural identity of Britain is far from a readily defined concept as it is, but surely our entertainers and particularly those that are part of many people's childhoods are part of that culture.  I grew up with Stuart Hall as an icon, firstly with It's A Knockout and more recently with his inimitable football commentaries.  While Jimmy Savile always seemed a bit dubious, one wanted to believe he was just a typical eccentric.  Who hasn't hummed tunes by Gary Glitter?!  If Rolf Harris is bang to rights, it's just another part of my childhood that's been wiped away!

Yes, they're disgusting and Rolf Harris is still only alleged but it's all just so very sad!

Had a 4 finger Kit Kat the other day.  Wasn't very nice at all.  Couldn't make out if it was the wafer or what. Had another next day from a different shop and that wasn't nice either :(

Are Topics getting smaller?  I'm sure they used to be about the size of a Mars but now they're like Milky Way size.

Can you still get Milky Ways?

I thought Brown came out top.  He seemed confident, relaxed and assured.  He also scored several points over Cameron with his jokes about the photos.  Clegg did well I thought.  He delivered his policies with clarity and had a robust style. I had him marginally behind Brown.  Cameron I thought had a stinker.  Scored well on law and order but generally seemed awkward and slightly flustered.

Tried one of these today.  The centre is really soft and malty, not as crunchy as Malteasers.  I would heartily recommend

Apparently a 16 year old lad kidnapped and raped a seven year old boy and was sentenced to community supervision.  He promptly went out and did same to a five year old.  he's now been given a three year minimum sentence with indeterminate release date.  Presumably the original judge has now resigned?  No? If any MPs are thinking of canvassing TARDIS next year. Think again. Sonic screwdrivers come keen.

Bounty Hunter has been in touch via my sonic messging system.  He's asked me to say, 'It's a vintage year.'  He said you would know what it means.

Just seen this rather funny snippet from the Yorkshire Herald from 2029.

Plans for invisible bus shelved

York city council have scrapped ideas to put the new invisible buses in service. The vehicles, which render all the occupants invisible too were due to be trialled in May.  A health and safety spokesman from Leeds said, "I'm glad our colleagues in York have seen sense - invisible buses were an accident waiting to happen. This new technology must be used with care"
